Richie Allen was raised in Melbourne, Australia, in a leafy suburb approximately 40 minutes east of Australia’s infamous wine region, the Yarra Valley. Influenced greatly by his parent’s keen interest, Richie grew up with a greater appreciation of wine than the average young Australian male. Upon graduation from high school in 1996, Richie chose to explore his knowledge in an alternate area of interest: Molecular Biology. Always the model student, he graduated at the top of his class, however, not convinced with the path he was laying down for himself, Richie embarked on a four-month rock climbing holiday to the United States to clear his thoughts. It was on this adventure that fate came knocking in the form of an invitation to a day of wine tasting. Richie was so taken and inspired by the Californian wines he tasted that day that it was suddenly clear to him what he needed to do. He promptly returned to Australia and spent the next few years engrossed in winemaking studies at Australia’s prestigious ‘The University of Adelaide’. After graduating in 2003, he then set about gaining as much practical winery experience as possible from top Australian and New Zealand producers including: Penfolds, Oakridge, Church Road and Vavasour. He eventually found himself back in California, on the doorstep of Rombauer Vineyards to undertake cellar work for a single harvest. However, Richie’s enthusiasm, vast and growing knowledge, and attention to detail were keenly identified and he was asked to continue on at Rombauer to see this potential expertly developed and nurtured. Having worked his way from the ground up, Richie now assumes the position of Rombauer’s Winemaker. In this role, Richie strives to achieve consistency of style and continual improvement in winemaking techniques by melding both traditional and modern approaches. Away from the winery, you’re likely to find Richie pursuing his passion for rock climbing. Read less

a shade lighter in the glass, lots of oaky spices on the nose, mocha, cedar, celery seed, ginger breadbay leaf, fruit leather, some notes of ehlmers glue and candy dots but generally a very agreeable and intereting nose that combines note of very ripe yet fresh fruit with vegetal aspects that are intriguing rather than off putting - really bright acidity, lovely medium bodies mouthfeel, tons of soft tannins which do grow in tenacity with time, dark macerated cherry and cassis on the midpalate leading to a long finish that is purely fruit driven. I have a feeling that this is not that highly regarded in the world of cali cabs but to my palate is completely successful with great freshness, structure and flavor.

Bright red fruit/cherries and raspberries on the nose. Smooth and tangy palate, maybe still a little closed. Tight acidity right now, with cranberries and raspberries.

Hint of damp earth, loam. Excellent nose of crushed cherry rolled in dirt, yet heavier fruits underneath.Front end reveals good acid, soft tannins and a lot of adjectives!

Diamond Selection Cabernet Sauvignon Rombauer Vineyards 2005 Diamond Selection Cabernet Sauvignon is robust and velvety. Layers of refined flavor are emphasized by the balanced tannins making this wine very approachable. Rich, plush aromas of mocha and plum bring focus to the ripe fig, black currant and spice. A supple and smooth mouth-feel, this full-bodied wine has a generous finish. Winemakers Comments "The Cabernet Sauvignon for the Diamond Selection comes from our High Ranch Vineyard, located on Bennett Lane below Mount Saint Helena. We select only the highest grade clusters from this 40 acre parcel. The resulting wine is rich and luscious with soft tannins and smooth structure. This wine drinks well now and is a great wine to cellar." Rombauer Vineyards The Rombauer family has over 30 years of winemaking experience in the Napa Valley and is dedicated to family, land, and community. Koerner Rombauer oversees the daily operations. Daughter, Sheana handles special events and promotional marketing while Koerner Rombauer III directs the national sales team.

Wine Tasting NotesThis delicious wine has rich, ripe, plush flavors of blackberry, currant, plum and wild berry backed with hints of spice. The fruit is nicely balanced with firm tannins. There is a burst of flavor that lingers on the palate and adds to the complexity of the wine. While this Cabernet Sauvignon drinks well now, it will age for many years.

Rombauer Vineyards 2003 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a plush, concentrated wine that exhibits ripe fruit flavors of blackberry, blueberry, and dark cherries that pick up momentum and open gracefully into the finish. There are supple tannins that highlight the fruit driven style of this wine. This wine has a tannin structure to last many years, yet is fruity enough to enjoy now.
