Rolf Binder Red Blend Barossa Valley Halliwell 2004

External Review by Premium Wine & Spirits:

Although the deep ruby-tinged 2004 Shiraz/Grenache Halliwell seems superficial, it is outstanding in its purity, richness, and overall perfume. While it does not have the depth of its 2003 counterpart, this beauty should drink well for 5ndash;7 years.

Rolf Binder Wines:
The vines in the vineyard were pruned and trellised in November (Spring), and their long shoots needed to be trained along the trellis. This was a vigorous growing time for the vines, and leading up to this vintage, we saw some of them already producing the small bunches of inflorescences (flowers) that will eventually become fruit.

A sexy, knock-out effort for drinking over the next 5ndash;7 years is the 2005 Shiraz/Grenache Halliwell. This aromatic blend of 60% Shiraz and 40% Grenache offers up notes of blueberries, raspberries, cherries, earth, spice, and a hint of oak. It is full-bodied with juicy, concentrated flavors, supple tannins, and a velvety, opulent finish.

Rolf Binderrsquo;s eponymous wines used to be sold under the Veritas label, but now his name is front and center. This entry-level Shiraz-Grenache offers a great introduction to the Binder style, combining a velvety mouthfeel with elegant notes of spice and earth. Therersquo;s black and plum fruit, but uncommon complexity for an Australian wine in this price range.

Bright and lively, with a refreshing balance to the cherry, rhubarb and blackberry flavors that hint at pepper and linger nicely against refined tannins. Drink now through 2012.
