Rolf Binder Heysen 2005

External Review by Prestige Wine & Spirits:

The 2005 Shiraz andldquo;Heysenandrdquo; is a blend of three vineyards. It was aged in 40% new French oak, 20% new American oak, and the balance neutral French. The nose reveals wood smoke, toast, game, bacon, blueberry, and blackberry. This leads to an opulent, complex, and intensely flavored wine which merits 6andndash;8 years in the cellar. This lengthy wine will drink well through 2025.

Rolf Binder Wines:
The vines in the vineyard were pruned and trellised in November (Spring), and their long shoots needed to be trained along the trellis. This was a vigorous growing time for the vines, and leading up to this vintage, we saw some of them already producing the small bunches of inflorescences (flowers) that will eventually become fruit.

Somehow winemaker Rolf Binder manages to combine cool, savory aspects with bold, ripe-fruit flavors. The 2005 Heysen marries cinnamon, clove and peppery spice with blackberries and plums, tying it all together with a robe of vanilla and chocolaty oak and finishing with a hint of espresso. This is a creamy, full-bodied wine whose fruit conceals considerable tannin; drink 2010andndash;2020.

Good ruby-red. Knockout nose combines black raspberry, strawberry, licorice, black pepper, chocolate and cinnamon, along with an intriguing minerality. Dense and thick but fresh, with a sappy, saline quality giving grip to the sweet, fleshy fla vors of raspberry, chocolate, eucalyptus, charred oak and exotic spices. Finishes peppery and very long, with sweet, fine tannins. Impressive.

Smooth and refined, with a minty edge to the ripe blackberry and cherry flavors. Finishes with a layer of spice and toast that lingers beautifully. Has depth and distinction. Drink now through 2017.
