Roger Sabon Fils & Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve 2009
Early 20th century,Seraphin Sabon is getting married with Marie Jausset, daughter of Romain and Marie-Angelie Brunel. Born in Serignan of Comtat, North of Orange, in the Vaucluse region,he takes his wife family's, wich origins dated from 1560. He regularly expands it. Marie gives birth to three sons,one of them is Roger. He founds the Domain in 1952 and now adays more than 15 hectares are located in the Chateauneuf du Pape appellation.
The nose showed rich red and black berries with savory mushroom and meaty notes, a hint of pepper and herbal tea leaves. On the palate it was medium bodied with firm structure buried beneath intense red cherry fruit, cinnamon spice, and led to a long, long palate staining finish. It's enjoyable now with a short decant, yet should age and improve effortlessly for 7 - 10 years. (94 points)

A similar blend, yet with Mourvedre in place of the Cinsault (80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre), Sabon’s 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve is a focused, structured effort that exhibits ample dried herbs, garrigue, leather and darker berry-styled fruit, with a slightly dry, savory character. Showing ample fruit on the palate however, with chewy, ripe tannin and solid mid-palate depth, it should round into form once bottled. Give it a couple years and plan on drinking bottles through 2024. Drink 2015–2024.
This is packed with boysenberry, fig and raspberry pâte de fruit notes, framed by black licorice details and carried by a racy graphite structure. The finish features a lingering echo of fruit accompanied by a serious tug of earth. Best from 2015 through 2026.
The 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reserve is knockout stuff. Full-bodied, textured and yet still elegant and finesse-oriented, it gives up tons of ground pepper, spice, new leather and black cherry nuances. Made from 80% Grenache and 10% each of Syrah and Mourvedre, it has excellent concentration, mouth-filling levels of fruit and a big finish. Drink this beauty over the coming decade.
Inky ruby. A highly aromatic bouquet evokes ripe blackberry, blueberry, spicecake, potpourri and musky herbs. Appealingly sweet and velvety, offering juicy dark berry flavors accented by sexy Asian spices and floral pastilles. Gains weight and power with air but maintains its energy, finishing with very good clarity and spicy persistence.
Very tight, with notes of blackberry, raspberry, cherry and currant preserves all coiled at the core, framed by details of black tea, bergamot and anise. The finish picks up a sleek iron note to accompany the perfumy edge. Very long despite the backwards profile. Should be a stunner with age. Best from 2017 through 2035.
If you can find any of the 150 or so cases made, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Secret des Sabon represents the essence of Chateauneuf du Pape, perhaps the essence of wine. It boasts an inky/purple color as well as a fabulous, intricate nose of blue, black and red fruits, graphite, chocolate, charcoal, forest floor, spring flowers and a touch of garrigue. Unbelievably concentrated, to the point of being viscous and nearly over the top, the wine is sensationally rich and pure with a nearly endless finish. There is plenty of tannin, but it is largely obscured by the luxuriousness of the wine’s high glycerin and intense fruit. Forget this beauty for 3–5 years and drink it over the following three decades or more. This is a magnificent Chateauneuf du Pape although it is impossible to say it is better than some of the previous blockbusters made at Domaine Roger Sabon, including the 1998, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2007 Secret des Sabon.
Even more backward and tasting like dry vintage port is the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Le Secret des Sabon. This beauty has extraordinary intensity as well as a nose of smoked meats, tobacco leaf, kirsch, graphite, ink and something that seems to be in many of the great vintages of Le Secret des Sabon, the smell of lacquered Peking duck. Massive and full-bodied, it needs 8–10 years of cellaring and should last for 40 years or more. Assuming you can find any of the 150–300 cases produced, it should only be purchased by patient connoisseurs who can wait for its magic to unfold. Kudos to the Sabon family for producing wines of consistently brilliant quality.

The wine has flavors of red and black fruit and spices; as it ages it also becomes suggestive of mushrooms and leather.
