Roessler Pinot Noir Russian River Valley Widdoes Vineyard 2007

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Moderately deep color with a purple cast to it, a bit of clean toast at first, fresh strawberry led pinot fruit and estery right out of the bottle, apricots, smoky, mossy, earthy with faint twangs of tarragon and cinnamon, strays over to chery cola and tobacco notes with time- rich and round in the mouth, softish yet retains good acidity, gentle tannins that build with time, richly fruited on the mid-palate in a sweet, new world way yet without significant weight, a bit of apricot here though more exotic, perhaps a hint of mango, excellent integration and balance the only fault here is a bit of heat which mars the finish which reveals a slightly bitter mineral core. 14.2% alcohol for what thats worth. This is excellent cali pinot, really different than what one usually finds and worth following for a few years,

In 2000 Roger Roessler, a longtime restaurateur with projects spread across the western part of the country, and his brother Richard, an electrical engineer and hobbyist winemaker, created Roessler Cellars, dedicated primarily to the kind of food-friendly Pinot Noir on which Roger had built wine lists for his restaurants. Roger’s restaurant interests included a share in the historic Swiss Hotel on Sonoma’s town square, where the Sangiacomo family, Carneros’ largest independent grape growers, were regular customers. When it occurred to Roger that he might like to make wine, Angelo Sangiacomo did not hesitate to offer him four and a half tons of pinot noir. On the strength of this offer, the brothers formed the winery, enlisted Wells Guthrie of Copain Wines as their winemaker, and began an expansion that encompassed, just seven years later, no fewer than eleven acclaimed and award winning vineyard-designated pinots sourced from Willamette Valley to the Santa Rita Hills, five appellation pinots with proprietary names, and a dribble of chardonnay. The Roesslers purchased forty acres near Annapolis, in the Sonoma Coast, and fourteen acres in Carneros, where they began planting Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in 2003. With offices on the beautiful plaza in Sonoma, The winemaking is now headed up by full time winemaker Scott Shapley, who is Guthrie’s brother in law and Roessler Cellars has become one of the premiere producers of hand crafted Pinot Noirs in the U.S. sourcing fruit from many of the finest coastal vineyards. As the Savoy is really Anderson Valley, the Widdoes is really Russian River Valley. Deeper in color with red (almost black) cherry aromas with hints of oak. Nice and silky texture with red fruit aromas and good acid balanced with nice tannins.

Located in the cool micro-climate of Green Valley in the Russian River Valley, this Pinot Noir comes from the single-vineyard Widdoes, where the older vines produce dark, bruiting fruit. Notes of smoky tobacco and dark chocolate pop in the nose, while black cherry flavors pack the palate.
