Roessler Pinot Noir Anderson Valley Bluejay 2009

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

The fruity nose is slightly confected with very sweet smelling blueberry fruit and gentle hints of spice and soil. This is like a junior fruit bomb. Packed with sweet fruit yet balanced by juicy acidity. Fruity through the medium length finish that's a touch sweet. This could use a bit more depth and complexity but is an approachable, popularly styled wine. 88pts

In 2000 Roger Roessler, a longtime restaurateur with projects spread across the western part of the country, and his brother Richard, an electrical engineer and hobbyist winemaker, created Roessler Cellars, dedicated primarily to the kind of food-friendly Pinot Noir on which Roger had built wine lists for his restaurants. Roger’s restaurant interests included a share in the historic Swiss Hotel on Sonoma’s town square, where the Sangiacomo family, Carneros’ largest independent grape growers, were regular customers. When it occurred to Roger that he might like to make wine, Angelo Sangiacomo did not hesitate to offer him four and a half tons of pinot noir. On the strength of this offer, the brothers formed the winery, enlisted Wells Guthrie of Copain Wines as their winemaker, and began an expansion that encompassed, just seven years later, no fewer than eleven acclaimed and award winning vineyard-designated pinots sourced from Willamette Valley to the Santa Rita Hills, five appellation pinots with proprietary names, and a dribble of chardonnay. The Roesslers purchased forty acres near Annapolis, in the Sonoma Coast, and fourteen acres in Carneros, where they began planting Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in 2003. With offices on the beautiful plaza in Sonoma, The winemaking is now headed up by full time winemaker Scott Shapley, who is Guthrie’s brother in law and Roessler Cellars has become one of the premiere producers of hand crafted Pinot Noirs in the U.S. sourcing fruit from many of the finest coastal vineyards. Bottle well-aired, about 2 hr. Alluring nose of ripe red fruit, cola spice (hints of nutmeg, oil peel), hints of walnuts and smoke. On the attack well-integrated, balanced, with decent acid which moves swiftly into smooth, clean, ripe slightly sour red fruit (cherry, blackberry) with a pleasant metal edge. Finish of similar, short to medium length. Dryish. Body medium, acid medium, tannin medium or lower. Delicious.

Poultry spices and rotting meat on the mouth, apple sauce, cinnamon, and a sweet rancidity.

Strange potato peelings and black jam on the nose. Some dark soil with a pretty floral nose and some blueberry to boot. The finish was a touch hot.

Medium-deep ruby color; rich, deep, dusty cherry and earthy aromas; earthy, dusty cherry flavors with complex herbal notes; silky texture; good structure and balance; long finish. Another nice Blue Jay bottling. Deep, complex and full of flavor. Pinot Report. A Pinot Noir wine from California in USA. 2009 Roessler Cellars Pinot Noir Bluejay 750ml

Pale red with a wide pink rim, clear at the edge. Rich aromas reveal candied red fruit, flowers, cola nut and a touch of vanilla bean and sweet oak. Very precise. Supple yet powerful on the palate, this is loaded with concentration and blue fruit, ... Cory Gowan. A Pinot Noir wine from California in USA. 2009 Roessler Cellars Pinot Noir Bluejay 750ml
