Roederer Cristal Rose 1996

Winemaker's Notes:

Yellow appearance with burnished gold reflections. Intense nose of white flowers, citrus and red berries, followed by warmer whiffs of toast and wood. On the palate , ripe lush fruits (vine peaches) and toasty flavours. Dense, fleshy structure. Powerful finish.

The distinctive qualities of each parcel are the result of great respect for nature. Louis Roederer’s philosophy is shared by Philippe Starck: both are engaged in a quest for authenticity.   The harvest from each parcel is pressed and vinified separately. Over the months, the wine is tasted and analysed by the oenologists; this provides them with an extensive aromatic palette that gives them a rich choice and enables them to develop blends under the watchful eye of the Cellar Master, Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon. This quest for authenticity matches Philippe Starck’s desire to collaborate on the development of a unique, finely tuned, and authentic cuvée. They decided to draw inspiration from river wines to create a straightforward, medium-dry, terroir-based champagne. Consequently, every measure was taken on the south-facing parcels of Pinot noir to nurture grapes that would attain great maturity, in order to obtain an excellent fruit that would require very minor corrective measures. Still delicious, but not quite as impressive as a bottle tasted last year. Rich and full, with aromas and flavors of baked apples and citrus and an easygoing finish.

A paradox. This has weight yet a sensation of weightlessness thanks to its seemless texture and harmony. Still firm and forceful yet elegant, offering citrus, pastry, biscuit and hazelnut notes enmeshed in the creamy texture. Great structure for aging. Drink now through 2015.

($175) Multidimensional nose offers baked apple, orange oil, acacia honey, white chocolate, toffee and earthy low tones. Expansive, superconcentrated and powerful but not aggressive, with wonderfully sweet flavors of orange, flowers and honey support... Stephen Tanzer's IWC. Intriguing earthy note marks this penetrating rosé. It touches on berry, citrus and pastry notes, shows fine density and a creamy texture. Beautifully integrated, with a long, nutty aftertaste. Best from 2006 through 2012. 1,600 cases made. (BS) Wine Spectator. A Champagne Blend wine from Champagne in France. 1996 Roederer, Louis Cristal Rose 750ml

The estate s 1996 Cristal, from a legendary vintage, does not disappoint. Like the 1979, there are elements of austerity that will require some time to sort themselves out, yet the 1996 is an insanely beautiful Cristal loaded with floral, perfumed fruit and vibrant minerality. The wine turns delicate in the glass, yet this is a sublime, fresh Cristal that is in need of further cellaring. In 1996 Cristal is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. According to Lecaillon 1996 is a vintage that did not respond well to oak aging, so only 3% of the wine was aged in wood, while 10% of the wine saw malolactic fermentation. This bottle was disgorged in 2007 and dosage was 8 grams. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2026.
