Rodney Strong Zinfandel Sonoma County Knotty Vines 2006

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Sweetly earthy like an old pipe with rather intense, spicy red fruits and a dusty, lightly peppery/white pepper quality with background notes of sassafras. Smells balanced and fresh. Really nicely balanced on entry with sweet fresh berry fruit supported by bright acids and moderate yet very well proportioned tannins. There’s a background fudgy tone that adds depth but this is really all about the bright, fresh fruit. Rich and exuberant! A lightly herbaceous, forest floor note on the finish with a lovely spice tone refreshes the palate. Very nice middle of the road Zin. 90pts

Rodney Strong Vineyards:
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. It was the first vineyard to plant Chardonnay in Chalk Hill (1965), and the first to release it (1977). It was also the first to plant Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley (1968) and the first to make a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County (released in 1974). ... Read more
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. Success didn’t come overnight: hard work and perseverance, coupled with a strong business sense and tender loving care, allowed the vineyard to prosper. When Tom Klein purchased the vineyard in 1989, a major overhaul was planned, and in a short 10 years, sales grew over 600% to 500,000 cases. Today, Rick Sayre, David Ramey, Greg Morthole, and Justin Seidenfeld, winemakers at Rodney Strong Vineyards, source grapes from over 1,000 acres of vines throughout Sonoma County, across 14 estate vineyards from Alexander Valley, the Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill, and Sonoma Coast. All of these high-quality grapes have allowed the winery to become the success that it is today. Read less

Robust, concentrated flavors of red and dark berries intermingle with hints of oak and vanilla. Fairly fruit-forward. Medium to full body.

Black current & tar aromas followed by flavors of black tea fruit, black pepper and clove; smooth and well-balanced.

Wine Tasting NotesFresh, bright berry fruit from our heritage Russian River vineyard combined with the ripe peppery jamminess from our Alexander Valley vineyards make for wonderful diversity of flavor showcasing the best that zinfandel can offer in one wine. Aging for 17 months in primarily American oak enhances the zinfandels inherent spicy qualities, while the ebullient fruit of this medium rich wine suggests enjoyment over the next 2 to 4 years.
