What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

Winemakers Notes

The Russian River Valley is well established as one of the premier pinot noir growing regions in the world, and we have been growing pinot noir here for over thirty years. Jane's Vineyard, a more recent planting of pinot noir named in honor of Tom Klein's mother, provided an incredible opportunity to take advantage of the newest technology, nursery material and other modern viticultural advances. Soft and rich, with layers of intense cherry, cola, caramel and earth, this impressive, full-bodied wine is aged in 100% French oak, which adds a distinctive toasty vanilla character. read more...

Today the Russian River Valley is home to some of the finest Pinot Noirs in the world. Vice President and Director of Winemaking Rick Sayre’s tenure with the winery began in 1979. He counts the illustrious Andre Tchelistcheff as his mentor, and was the first winemaker in the USA to set up a cooperage within the winery, a practice that is fairly common around read more...

Wine Skinny

Prominent earth and game aromas and flavors accent red berry and cherry fruit, finishing with toasty, sweet vanilla notes on the full finish. Ready to drink now and over the next year or two.
