Rodney Strong Symmetry Red Meritage Alexander Valley 2012

External Review by We Speak Wine:

At Rodney Strong Vineyards, we focus on modern artisan winemaking, exclusively from Sonoma County, California. Our family-owned winery is committed to quality wines and to protecting our resources for the future. We are solar powered, practice sustainable and Fish Friendly Farming and we are Sonoma County’s first carbon neutral winery. Philosophy: With over 40 years of experience growing classic French grape varieties in Alexander Valley, we select our best Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and other traditional Bordeaux grapes from the hills that overlook the valley, where well-drained rocky soils combine with warm, sunny days and cool nights to provide ideal growing conditions. Select areas within each vineyard are hand harvested individually, fermented separately and aged in the finest French oak barrels. After about six months, each lot is tasted and graded; only the highest graded wines are considered for Symmetry. The blend is then assembled, and the wine is returned to barrels to facilitate flavor integration. The wine is aged an additional 10 to 18 months, before bottling. In the Cellar: Our Symmetry Meritage is created in our small lot winemaking facility, the Artisan Cellar. Our winemaker Greg Morthole works closely with consulting winemaker David Ramey as we employ state of the art techniques such as cluster pre-sorting, berry sorting, and extended maceration. Only indigenous yeast and naturally occurring malolactic fermentation are allowed. With small tanks and equipment sized for the most discriminating vineyard selection process, this facility is truly state of the art and represents the Klein family commitment towards producing the finest wines possible. In the Vineyard: The 2012 vintage started off warm and dry, with little to no frost. By mid-summer people were beginning to whisper about how perfect the growing season was going. Rain-free warm days and cool nights were the rule, with no storms or heat spikes. We harvested our Cabernet Sauvignon between October 4th and the 20th, the Merlot September 27th through October 9th, the Cabernet Franc on October 9th, the Malbec on October 9th and 10th, and the Petit Verdot on October 10th. Tasting Notes: The 2012 Symmetry has a luxurious bouquet of blackberries, currants, cassis and crushed lavender which unfold on the palate with silky layers of black fruits, dark chocolate covered espresso beans and baking spices. This wine is rich, harmonious and elegant with a long, lingering finish. Enjoy this wine now with a barbecue tri-tip, lamb roast or stew or cellar for enjoyment for years to come. Blend: 75% Cabernet Sauvignon 13% Merlot 5% Cabernet Franc 5% Malbec 2% Petit Verdot Alcohol: 14.5% TA: 0.57g/100mL pH: 3.74

Rodney Strong Vineyards:
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. It was the first vineyard to plant Chardonnay in Chalk Hill (1965), and the first to release it (1977). It was also the first to plant Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley (1968) and the first to make a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County (released in 1974). ... Read more
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. Success didn’t come overnight: hard work and perseverance, coupled with a strong business sense and tender loving care, allowed the vineyard to prosper. When Tom Klein purchased the vineyard in 1989, a major overhaul was planned, and in a short 10 years, sales grew over 600% to 500,000 cases. Today, Rick Sayre, David Ramey, Greg Morthole, and Justin Seidenfeld, winemakers at Rodney Strong Vineyards, source grapes from over 1,000 acres of vines throughout Sonoma County, across 14 estate vineyards from Alexander Valley, the Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill, and Sonoma Coast. All of these high-quality grapes have allowed the winery to become the success that it is today. Read less
