Rodney Strong Symmetry 2012

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Strong cedar and cinnamon spice box aromas with plenty of heat and ripe cherries. Quite juicy and full in the mouth with baking spices and black cherry aromas, waves of white chocolate and caramel, reasonably good tannic structure and some blackberries and blueberries on the long finish.

Rodney Strong Vineyards:
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. It was the first vineyard to plant Chardonnay in Chalk Hill (1965), and the first to release it (1977). It was also the first to plant Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley (1968) and the first to make a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County (released in 1974). ... Read more
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. Success didn’t come overnight: hard work and perseverance, coupled with a strong business sense and tender loving care, allowed the vineyard to prosper. When Tom Klein purchased the vineyard in 1989, a major overhaul was planned, and in a short 10 years, sales grew over 600% to 500,000 cases. Today, Rick Sayre, David Ramey, Greg Morthole, and Justin Seidenfeld, winemakers at Rodney Strong Vineyards, source grapes from over 1,000 acres of vines throughout Sonoma County, across 14 estate vineyards from Alexander Valley, the Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill, and Sonoma Coast. All of these high-quality grapes have allowed the winery to become the success that it is today. Read less

Always one of the top Meritage wines produced in California and Rodney Strong's flagship, Symmetry is a wine whose name sums up what it's all about. To make Symmetry select areas within each of their many Alexander Valley vineyards where they have grown Bordeaux varietals for over 40 years, are hand harvested, fermented separately and aged in the finest French oak barrels. After about six months, each lot is tasted and graded; only the highest graded wines are considered for Symmetry. The blend is then assembled, and the wine is returned to barrels to facilitate flavor integration. The wine is aged an additional 10 to 18 months, before bottling. Consulting Enologist David Ramey oversee the entire process. For this stellar 2012 vintage the blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot and the French oak barrels were 37% new. Robert Parker said about this wine "The 2012 Proprietary Red Symmetry, a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, exhibits chocolaty, blackberry and black cherry fruit intermixed with earth and spice characteristics, medium body and a supple, round, seductive mouthfeel. Elegant and mid-weight, it is best drunk over the next 7-8 years." And this classy red blend scoreed 93 points in the Ultimate Wine Challenge. They said "Cassis and black raspberry are rich and dark on the nose. Equally concentrated in the mouth, the fruit is dark and intense, enhanced by charred wood and mineral rich soil. A hint of earthy mushroom and herbs comes through on the spicy finish."
