Rodney Strong Single Vineyard Alexander's Crown Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

Member Review by Nicki Gig:

Caramel, deep darker notes, black berry, blueberry, raspberry combinations on the palate with a nice earthiness on the finish, smooth and delectable with the steak. Nice longer finish than the crozes hermitage I had earlier that night with the same dinner.

Rodney Strong Vineyards:
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. It was the first vineyard to plant Chardonnay in Chalk Hill (1965), and the first to release it (1977). It was also the first to plant Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley (1968) and the first to make a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County (released in 1974). ... Read more
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. It was also the first to plant Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley (1968) and the first to make a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County (released in 1974). Success didn’t come overnight: hard work and perseverance, coupled with a strong business sense and tender loving care, allowed the vineyard to prosper. When Tom Klein purchased the vineyard in 1989, a major overhaul was planned, and in a short 10 years, sales grew over 600% to 500,000 cases. Today, Rick Sayre, David Ramey, Greg Morthole, and Justin Seidenfeld, winemakers at Rodney Strong Vineyards, source grapes from over 1,000 acres of vines throughout Sonoma County, across 14 estate vineyards from Alexander Valley, the Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill, and Sonoma Coast. All of these high-quality grapes have allowed the winery to become the success that it is today. Read less

Blackberry, red currant and fresh earth are core flavors with the Crown, and are accented by hints of mint and herbs. 20 months in primarily French oak adds a subtle toasty spice component, and both rounds and softens this elegant, Bordeaux styled Cabernet into a graceful expression of the varietal that will entreat you to enjoy another glass. Drink this classic "collector's" Cabernet Sauvignon over the next 4 to 8 years.

Alexander's Crown Vineyard produced the first Vineyard Designated Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County. Planted by Rod Strong in 1971, the first vintage was the unforgettable 1974, which placed Sonoma County, and the Alexander's Crown, indelibly on 'the map', not to mention garnering top honors by winning the Sweepstakes award at the Sonoma County Harvest Fair. Since then, it has continued to gain prominence over the years.Blackberry, red currant, and fresh earth are core flavors with the Crown, and are accented by hints of mint and herbs. 20 months in primarily French oak adds a subtle toasty spice component, and both rounds and softens this elegant, Bordeaux styled Cabernet into a graceful expression of the varietal that will entreat you to enjoy another glass. This is one of California’s historic Cabernets. When it debuted in 1974 it was the first single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma County. Since that time it has proven to be one of the best and most expressive. Because the Alexander’s Crown Vineyard is one of the highest points in the warm Alexander Valley the grapes mature more slowly and take on more complexity and character. This 2005 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon but individual blocks within the vineyard are all vinified separately. And then a final blend is made. The wine is aged for 20 months in 90% French oak barrels. Additional bottle age has given this wine beautiful integration and development, bringing supple, soft tannins and unique, bordeaux-style flavors of blackberry, olive compote, currants, tobacco and smoke that linger on the finish.
