Rodney Strong Sauvignon Blanc Charlotte's Home Sonoma County 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Sweet and intensely floral on the nose with distinctive gingery wood spice and toast notes on the nose over a base of apricot, lemongrass and green apple fruit. A bit soft on entry, there’s fine acidity here but it is wrapped up in a rather creamy and medium full bodied texture. There are very attractive pineapple and clementine flavors early on the palate which gain more of a stone fruit character on the mid palate where the oak spice adds a certain spark. This really has a lovely texture, round, full yet transparent and a bit angular. the wood spice is going to be a dealbreaker for some but for most palate it just adds complexity here and fades away gently on the very lightly vanilla laced grapefruit and creamy green apple finish. 89pts

Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. It was the first vineyard to plant Chardonnay in Chalk Hill (1965), and the first to release it (1977).   Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. It was the first vineyard to plant Chardonnay in Chalk Hill (1965), and the first to release it (1977). It was also the first to plant Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley (1968) and the first to make a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County (released in 1974). Success didn’t come overnight: hard work and perseverance, coupled with a strong business sense and tender loving care, allowed the vineyard to prosper. When Tom Klein purchased the vineyard in 1989, a major overhaul was planned, and in a short 10 years, sales grew over 600% to 500,000 cases. Today, Rick Sayre, David Ramey, Greg Morthole, and Justin Seidenfeld, winemakers at Rodney Strong Vineyards, source grapes from over 1,000 acres of vines throughout Sonoma County, across 14 estate vineyards from Alexander Valley, the Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill, and Sonoma Coast. All of these high-quality grapes have allowed the winery to become the success that it is today. Read less

Nice, light sauvignon blanc from Rodney Strong. Grapefruit, lemon, subtle lime and nice acidity all in good balance.

Crisp, tangy, with some minerality but not much grapefruit like a New Zealand or Aussie SB. Very drinkable by itself but also goes well with lighter fair, seafood, pasta, ...

In a blind tasting I would guess this was a $20 Sancerre. Almost no fruit. Very mineral and terroir driven. I love it because it was not what I expected from a Sonoma Sauvignon Blanc.

Light, crisp, and highly aromatic, the warmer climate Alexander Valley fruit gives the wine ripe pear and melon character, while the ocean cooled Russian River fruit offers citrus, mineral, and traditional herbaceous qualities. Together, the two valleys make a classic Sonoma County sauvignon blanc that is fresh, lively, and will drink beautifully over the next 1 to 2 years.

Clean and simple, this is a dry wine with refreshingly tart flavors of lemons, limes, grapefruits and figs. It's a very pleasant sipper and would work well as a cocktail wine.

Balanced between its lean, light scent of mineral lees and round, simple fruit, this is a gentle Sauvignon, easy with a range of light foods.

Mouthwateringly juicy, featuring a zingy, crisp acidity, tart lemon, lime, apple and spicy pear flavors, with a pleasant bite of citrus peel on the finish. Drink now. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

Medium bodied with aromas and flavors of rich tropical and citrus fruit. Gruyère fondue.
