Rodney Strong Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2014

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Spicy cinnamon and vanilla bean aromas with chocolate cherry and mineral earth. Loads of dark berry flavors with cherry, fizzy cola and fresh spice - berry approachable and pleasant with a creamy texture to the finish and assertive but gentle tannins. Very nice.

Rodney Strong Vineyards:
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. It was the first vineyard to plant Chardonnay in Chalk Hill (1965), and the first to release it (1977). It was also the first to plant Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley (1968) and the first to make a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County (released in 1974). ... Read more
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. Success didn’t come overnight: hard work and perseverance, coupled with a strong business sense and tender loving care, allowed the vineyard to prosper. When Tom Klein purchased the vineyard in 1989, a major overhaul was planned, and in a short 10 years, sales grew over 600% to 500,000 cases. Today, Rick Sayre, David Ramey, Greg Morthole, and Justin Seidenfeld, winemakers at Rodney Strong Vineyards, source grapes from over 1,000 acres of vines throughout Sonoma County, across 14 estate vineyards from Alexander Valley, the Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill, and Sonoma Coast. All of these high-quality grapes have allowed the winery to become the success that it is today. Read less

Medium intensity ripe red fruit aromas of red berry/red cherry and crushed violet on the nose with herbal and spice notes of clove, nutmeg and lavender. Bright red cherry notes are quite ripe and carry with them some light chocolate and vanilla notes, light toast and some black pepper, with licorice and black currant bringing up the rear. A well integrated bottling, with the fruit and acidity balanced and plenty of spice character to keep things interesting. 89 pts.

A bit light on the nose with nuanced earth, smoke and cola aromas floating over a base of slightly tarry blackberry fruit. Bright on entry with a little sweet tart interplay going on quickly leading to some candied flavors of vanilla and caramel which form a base under bright red fruit on the palate. The fruit lacks a little intensity here, and while this is smooth and well balanced its a little bit more about the wood than the fruit today with drying, chalky tannins outlasting the fruit on the modest finish. This holds its alcohol well though there is a touch of alcoholic sweetness on the palate, which many people will find appealing. 84pts

This is rather boldly perfumed with rather fine aromas of burnished cherry fruit, beetroot, a little inkiness, and assertive sapwood and herb notes. There’s a touch of coriander and some nice vanilla bean tones as well, with a hint of orange blossom. A bit round and sweet on entry before the acidity sweeps in, allowing the black raspberry and currant fruit to take center stage. The fruit is bold but fresh with admirable complexity and a rich, yet soft feel. The finish shows a bit of sweetness as well, but is fairly long with dark fruit and aromatic spice notes. 90pts

Light in color and body, pinot with main flavors of ripe red cherry and smoke. Less body than I like. Short finish to speak of. Lacks complexity, especially at this price.

Rustic nose of cherry and brambly fruits. Bright fruit on the palate of cherry and strawberry. Fairly jammy.

HISTORY: Rod Strong was among the first modern wine pioneers with a vision to plant Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley. In 1968, he planted our heritage River East Vineyard in the alluvial clay-loam soils adjacent to the winery in Healdsburg. Today the Russian River Valley is well established as one of the premier Pinot Noir growing regions in the world, and we continue to rely on the original River East Vineyard as a core contributor to our estate vineyard bottling. THE VINTAGE & VINEYARD: A mild, dry winter encouraged early bud break in Sonoma County in 2014. The growing season was very warm overall, but tempered by some overcast days in late July and late August plus a heavy drizzle in early September. Our Russian River Pinot Noir was harvested August 27 through September 15 under ideal conditions. TASTING NOTES: The 2014 Estate Russian River Valley Pinot Noir has lovely aromas of red fruit, fl oral and earth. With a soft and silky texture, on the palate cherry, cranberry, and baking spice characteristics shine through with balance, acidity and a nice lingering finish. This medium bodied wine was aged for 15 months in small French oak barrels, which added a hint of toasty vanilla and spice complexity. Enjoy this Pinot Noir now with gruyere cheese and charcuterie, wild mushroom pizza or slow roasted pulled pork or cellar it for enjoyment for the next 2 to 4 years. CELLAR & FERMENTATION: 13 months in 100% French oak barrels, 35% new ALCOHOL: 14.5% TA: 0.52 g/100 mL PH: 3.59

THE VINEYARD: 2013 was the kind of growing season that most would wish we could have every year: a dry, frost-free spring, a warm summer without heat spikes, and a warm rain free autumn that allows for picking all varieties in their turn when they are perfectly mature. Our Russian River Valley Pinot Noir was harvested September 12th through September 29th under ideal conditions. TASTING NOTES: The 2013 Estate Russian River Valley Pinot Noir has lovely aromas of cherry and rose petals. With a soft and silky texture on the palate, cherries, pomegranate, floral and baking spice characteristics shine through with balance, acidity and a nice lingering finish. This medium bodied wine was aged for 13 months in small French oak barrels, which added a hint of toasty vanilla and spice complexity. Enjoy this Pinot Noir now with a roasted chicken with a red wine butter reduction sauce, roasted pork loin or wild mushrooms over polenta or cellar it for enjoyment for the next two to four years. Rodney Strong was a pioneer in this region, planting Pinot Noir in his River East Vineyard in the Russian River Valley back in 1968. Now this vineyard is the core contributor to the estate vineyards that produce superb Pinot Noir every year. 2013 was an outstanding vintage and this wine is a beauty. Aged 13 months in 100% French oak barrels, 35% new. It received a Double Gold Award at the 2016 Toast of the Coast Wine Competition and it scored a whopping 96 points from Wine Review Online who said "What a gorgeous wine! Aromas of cherry, strawberry, dusty minerality, flowers, soft spice and powder lead to a palate that's bright and elegant, with zesty acidity keeping the flavors popping through a long mouth-watering finish." A stunning value!

The 2012 Pinot Noir Estate reveals pleasant pomegranate, plum and black cherry fruit, a subtle hint of oak, and a delicate floral note. Medium-bodied, impressively pure and soft, it should be consumed over the next 3–4 years.

This food-friendly Pinot Noir has a light body, dryness and crisp acidity that make it easy to pair with steaks, chops, salmon, mushroom risotto and similar fare. There’s nothing shy, however, about the flavors, which brim with ripe raspberries, cherries and pomegranates, accented with toasty, spicy oak. Drink now–2017.
