Rodney Strong Vineyards:
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. It was the first vineyard to plant Chardonnay in Chalk Hill (1965), and the first to release it (1977). It was also the first to plant Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley (1968) and the first to make a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County (released in 1974). ... Read more
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. Success didn’t come overnight: hard work and perseverance, coupled with a strong business sense and tender loving care, allowed the vineyard to prosper. When Tom Klein purchased the vineyard in 1989, a major overhaul was planned, and in a short 10 years, sales grew over 600% to 500,000 cases. Today, Rick Sayre, David Ramey, Greg Morthole, and Justin Seidenfeld, winemakers at Rodney Strong Vineyards, source grapes from over 1,000 acres of vines throughout Sonoma County, across 14 estate vineyards from Alexander Valley, the Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill, and Sonoma Coast. All of these high-quality grapes have allowed the winery to become the success that it is today. Read less

Funky, kinky smoky, rubbery sulfur notes hide the core of spicy, complex fruit with intense cola, cold coffee and graham cracker notes struggling to emerge from the sulfur. Blackberry jam and a touch of char peak out then recede. A bit dead in the mouth with the sulfur tamping down the midpalate. . Not lively or fresh yet with a rich round mouthfeel. The dark cherry fruit it fairly intense with complicating notes of spicy, light vanilla and cinnamon that leads to a finish that accentuates the oaky vanilla a touch and has a cherry candy tone to it. A bit short. Solid if uninspiring but marred by the sulfur today. When it blows of this should emerge around 85-87pts

Nose filled with vegetal, mushroom, earthtones, funky smells but intriguing. and then on the palate amazing red fruit, cherry and spice with the earthnotes underlying and more pronounced on the finish

Nice, sweet, fruit driven pinot noir. Very fruit forward, with strong flavors of strawberries and raspberries in the mouth, although its more mushroomy on the nose. Finishes on cocoa.

Light ruby in color, this soft, harmonious Pinot Noir has the feel and structure of a medium-range village Burgundy from the Cote de Beaune. Dark cherry, charcoal, and subdued cola notes are found in both aromas and flavors, along with a subtle floral component. Not especially complex or long, but round and pleasant to drink, varietally right-on, and very well-priced. Would be a great restaurant wine.

I just picked up my bottle at my local liquor store. I am cellaring it for the next very special occasion. The wine maker notes suggest that the consistent temperature and moisture allowed this vintage to achieve an amazing grape. Rodney Strong has long been a favorite of mine, from their RR Pinot to their Chalk Chardonnay, I have felt that for a well known name they really have their act together, providing boutique quality wines that are nationally recognized. I bought this one specifically because I know the brand and quality associated with RS. Interesting to me was that in the winemaker notes they say how much of each clone was used, and which clone it is. Based upon my experience with this winery, I am rating this a 4 out of 5, and will revise once drank if this changes.

this wine tasted "odd" enough for me to seek forum validation of the odd taste. Im a fan of other Rodney Strong wines, but his one is off from the first whiff. would not buy again.
