Rodney Strong Rockaway Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2014

External Review by We Speak Wine:

THE VINEYARD: Established in 1994, Rockaway is planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but includes all fi ve of the classic Bordeaux varieties. Rising up to an elevation of 750 feet, the land generally slopes northeast and southwest, with soils comprised of gravelly clay subsoil over fractured sandstone. This well-drained, low pH earth tends to encourage the production of small-berried clusters, ideal for making a bold, concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon with juicy red and black fruit character, and an elegantly round and seductive mid-palate. THE HARVEST: 2014 was a gift from Mother Nature to winegrowers in Sonoma County. Most of the rain for the growing season came late, in February and March, followed by a warm and dry spring. Bud break was early and the warm summer sun ripened the fruit without any complications through Harvest. Most of the Cabernet was picked by the time we received a light rain on the evening of September 17. We took a break from picking at Rockaway, allowing the vineyard to completely dry out, and for the sugars to accumulate in the last few blocks of Cabernet and Petit Verdot at the very top of the vineyard, which we picked on October 6. TASTE PROFILE: The 2014 Rockaway has wonderful concentrated fl avors of black cherry, red currant and plum with a hint of sage and leather. The earthy minerality of the wine is balanced out by notes of baking spices with a rich, complex structure and a long lingering fi nish. Enjoy this wine now or cellar it for enjoyment in 8 to 10 years. COMPOSITION: 96% Cabernet Sauvignon 3% Petit Verdot 1% Merlot BARREL REGIME: 27 months in 100% French oak barrels, 77% new ALCOHOL: 14.5% TA: 0.62g/100mL pH: 3.69

Rodney Strong Vineyards:
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. It was the first vineyard to plant Chardonnay in Chalk Hill (1965), and the first to release it (1977). It was also the first to plant Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley (1968) and the first to make a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County (released in 1974). ... Read more
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. Success didn’t come overnight: hard work and perseverance, coupled with a strong business sense and tender loving care, allowed the vineyard to prosper. When Tom Klein purchased the vineyard in 1989, a major overhaul was planned, and in a short 10 years, sales grew over 600% to 500,000 cases. Today, Rick Sayre, David Ramey, Greg Morthole, and Justin Seidenfeld, winemakers at Rodney Strong Vineyards, source grapes from over 1,000 acres of vines throughout Sonoma County, across 14 estate vineyards from Alexander Valley, the Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill, and Sonoma Coast. All of these high-quality grapes have allowed the winery to become the success that it is today. Read less
