Rodney Strong Rockaway Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2013

External Review by We Speak Wine:

THE VINEYARD: Established in 1994, Rockaway is planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but includes all fi ve of the classic Bordeaux varieties. Rising up to an elevation of 750 feet, the land generally slopes northeast and southwest, with soils comprised of gravelly clay subsoil over fractured sandstone. This well-drained, low pH earth tends to encourage the production of small-berried clusters, ideal for making a bold, concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon with juicy red and black fruit character, and an elegantly round and seductive mid-palate. THE HARVEST: 2013 was the kind of growing season that most would wish we could have every year; a dry, frost-free spring, a warm summer with minimal heat spikes, and a warm rain free autumn that allowed for picking the fruit perfectly mature. Warm days with cool evenings prevailed in September which kept sugar accumulation at an even pace and left acidity in the grapes. Rockaway is always a complicated harvest, with separate blocks and the varietals coming to full ripeness at slightly different times. We harvested the Rockaway Cabernet Sauvignon from a dozen different blocks between September 24 and October 8. A few blocks were fermented together, but most were kept separate until blending the following spring. The Merlot was picked on September 23, the Malbec on September 24, and fi nally the Petit Verdot from the very top of the hill on October 7 and 8. TASTE PROFILE: The 2013 Rockaway has wonderful concentrated fl avors of black cherry, red currant and plum with a hint of sage and leather. The earthy minerality of the wine is balanced out by notes of baking spices with a rich, complex structure and a long lingering fi nish. Enjoy this wine now or cellar it for enjoyment for years to come. COMPOSITION: 81% Cabernet Sauvignon 12% Malbec 4% Merlot 3% Petit Verdot BARREL REGIME: 26 months in 100% French oak barrels, 48% new ALCOHOL: 14.5% TA: 0.64g/100mL PH: 3.77

Rodney Strong Vineyards:
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. It was the first vineyard to plant Chardonnay in Chalk Hill (1965), and the first to release it (1977). It was also the first to plant Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley (1968) and the first to make a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County (released in 1974). ... Read more
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. Success didn’t come overnight: hard work and perseverance, coupled with a strong business sense and tender loving care, allowed the vineyard to prosper. When Tom Klein purchased the vineyard in 1989, a major overhaul was planned, and in a short 10 years, sales grew over 600% to 500,000 cases. Today, Rick Sayre, David Ramey, Greg Morthole, and Justin Seidenfeld, winemakers at Rodney Strong Vineyards, source grapes from over 1,000 acres of vines throughout Sonoma County, across 14 estate vineyards from Alexander Valley, the Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill, and Sonoma Coast. All of these high-quality grapes have allowed the winery to become the success that it is today. Read less
