Rodney Strong Pinot Noir Russian River Valley Estate Vineyards 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

In 2008, we crafted our Reserve pinot noir in our “Winery Within the Winery.” Techniques, such as cluster pre-sorting, berry sorting, cold soaking, and a free-run only protocol are accomplished in a truly state of the art facility, with small tanks and equipment sized for the most discriminating vineyard selection process.

Rodney Strong Vineyards:
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. It was the first vineyard to plant Chardonnay in Chalk Hill (1965), and the first to release it (1977). It was also the first to plant Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley (1968) and the first to make a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County (released in 1974). ... Read more
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. Success didn’t come overnight: hard work and perseverance, coupled with a strong business sense and tender loving care, allowed the vineyard to prosper. When Tom Klein purchased the vineyard in 1989, a major overhaul was planned, and in a short 10 years, sales grew over 600% to 500,000 cases. Today, Rick Sayre, David Ramey, Greg Morthole, and Justin Seidenfeld, winemakers at Rodney Strong Vineyards, source grapes from over 1,000 acres of vines throughout Sonoma County, across 14 estate vineyards from Alexander Valley, the Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill, and Sonoma Coast. All of these high-quality grapes have allowed the winery to become the success that it is today. Read less

This is rather boldly perfumed with rather fine aromas of burnished cherry fruit, beetroot, a little inkiness, and assertive sapwood and herb notes. There’s a touch of coriander and some nice vanilla bean tones as well, with a hint of orange blossom. A bit round and sweet on entry before the acidity sweeps in, allowing the black raspberry and currant fruit to take center stage. The fruit is bold but fresh with admirable complexity and a rich, yet soft feel. The finish shows a bit of sweetness as well, but is fairly long with dark fruit and aromatic spice notes. 90pts

Rustic nose of cherry and brambly fruits. Bright fruit on the palate of cherry and strawberry. Fairly jammy.

Rating: 89/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the October 2010 issue. This deep and very rich wine starts out with a wealth of plummy fruit and sweet oak in the nose, and, while it follows with lots of fruity substance and depth, it is a bit brooding and backward and far less frontal than expected. It is a big, solid Pinot that will do well with age, and it deserves to be set aside for a minimum of three or four years.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Cellar for future drinking. Wine will improve with bottle aging.

Rodney Strong Vineyards has been producing quality wines from Sonoma fruit for 50 years. And because of their long experience they’re able to source the finest grapes for this Reserve Pinot Noir. All the fruit comes from first tier growers in the Russian River Valley. Lots are vinified separately by the winemaking team headed by Rick Sayre with David Ramey, Consulting Enologist. Aging is in 100% French oak for 10 months, then the wines are selected for complexity, concentration, and style for the final blend. Soft and rich, with layers of red cherry, raspberry, cola, caramel, and a hint of Asian spice, this is an impressive, deeply colored and full-bodied wine.

It floods the palate with cherry and raspberry pie filling, vanilla, cinnamon and sandalwood flavors, and the texture is silky and elegant."
