Rodney Strong Vineyards:
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. It was the first vineyard to plant Chardonnay in Chalk Hill (1965), and the first to release it (1977). It was also the first to plant Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley (1968) and the first to make a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County (released in 1974). ... Read more
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. Success didn’t come overnight: hard work and perseverance, coupled with a strong business sense and tender loving care, allowed the vineyard to prosper. When Tom Klein purchased the vineyard in 1989, a major overhaul was planned, and in a short 10 years, sales grew over 600% to 500,000 cases. Today, Rick Sayre, David Ramey, Greg Morthole, and Justin Seidenfeld, winemakers at Rodney Strong Vineyards, source grapes from over 1,000 acres of vines throughout Sonoma County, across 14 estate vineyards from Alexander Valley, the Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill, and Sonoma Coast. All of these high-quality grapes have allowed the winery to become the success that it is today. Read less

Nicely and sappy on the nose with a lovely herbal stemmy quality to the black cherry fruit. There’s a nice underlay of gentle wood spice here with an earthy core on the nose. This is very fluid up front with lovely, pure cherry fruit edged in light spice tones. The tannins are barely perceptible and the acid very well integrated, giving this a light, transparent feel. The fruit is rich and bright with some gentle suggestions of herb and spice adding some complexity, particularly on the moderately long finish. A solid Pinot. 88pts

Ruby in color with aromas of strawberry, black cherry, forest floor and fennel. Bright cherry and strawberry fruit finishing with fine tannins. A delicious Cali Pinot that I think will get more interesting with a couple more years of cellaring or decent for a couple hours now. An exceptional value for $20.

Thin, tart, and unpleasant. I would not recommend this wine. In fact, if all Pinots tasted like the Rodney Strong 2009, I would not drink Pinot again.

Made in a leaner, dried, lighter style than most Russian River Pinots, but the elegance and complexity are very attractive. Shows a white pepper and herbal note to the sour cherry candy fruit, and is balanced with perfect acidity. A beautiful wine to accompany, not overwhelm, fine foods. Production was an astounding 109,000 cases.

Tastes sharp and jammy, a very young wine with fresh flavors of cherries and black raspberries. Gets the Pinot job done at a decent price, and could mellow in the bottle through 2011.

Soft and rich, with layers of red cherry, raspberry, cola, caramel, and a hint of Asian spice, this impressively silky, deeply colored and full-bodied wine is aged in 100% French oak, which adds an elegant toasty vanilla character. Enjoy this voluptuous pinot noir now and over the next 3 to 5 years.

Rod Strong was among the first modern wine pioneers with a vision to plant pinot noir in the Russian River Valley. In 1968 he planted our heritage River East Vineyard in the alluvial clay-loam soils a

Oak surrounds the gentle red fruit of this wine with warm cinnamon and toasty, black walnut flavors. Underneath, the fruit is tart and suited to braised rabbit.

Rodney Strong Vineyards has been producing quality wines from Sonoma fruit for 50 years. And because of their long experience they're able to source the finest grapes for this Reserve Pinot Noir. All the fruit comes from first tier growers in the Russian River Valley. Lots are vinified separately by the winemaking team headed by Rick Sayre with David Ramey, Consulting Enologist. Aging is in 100% French oak for 10 months, then the wines are selected for complexity, concentration, and style for the final blend. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 91 points saying "A lovely restaurant-style Pinot Noir, showing lots of class and elegance, yet with enough modesty to step aside and let the food star. Dry and silky, it shows raspberry, cherry, red currant and cola flavors, accented with sweet, smoky oak. Suggested pairings include steak, lamb chops and grilled ahi tuna."
