Rodney Strong Chardonnay Sonoma County Chalk Hill Vineyard Reserve 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Tight and glossy on the nose with a veneer of nutty oak over light minty and waxy kettle popcorn caramel notes, all flecked with a hint of lemon zest. Super bright and focused on entry with excellent tent pole acidity that supports fresh apricot, pineapple and lemon flavors framed with nutty oak and some light, creamy ginger creme brulee notes. Large-scaled but with excellent balance, this remains fresh and vivid in the mouth and finishes with a lovely clear citrus and lightly toasty oaky finale that has a touch of the mintiness I found on the nose. 92pts Acidity: Medium Perceived Sweetness: Low Oak: Medium Spicy Flavors: Medium Low Savory Flavors: Medium Fruity Flavors: Medium Intensity of Flavor: Medium High Weight in Mouth: Medium

Rodney Strong Vineyards:
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. It was the first vineyard to plant Chardonnay in Chalk Hill (1965), and the first to release it (1977). It was also the first to plant Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley (1968) and the first to make a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County (released in 1974). ... Read more
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. Success didn’t come overnight: hard work and perseverance, coupled with a strong business sense and tender loving care, allowed the vineyard to prosper. When Tom Klein purchased the vineyard in 1989, a major overhaul was planned, and in a short 10 years, sales grew over 600% to 500,000 cases. Today, Rick Sayre, David Ramey, Greg Morthole, and Justin Seidenfeld, winemakers at Rodney Strong Vineyards, source grapes from over 1,000 acres of vines throughout Sonoma County, across 14 estate vineyards from Alexander Valley, the Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill, and Sonoma Coast. All of these high-quality grapes have allowed the winery to become the success that it is today. Read less

A bit overly oaked but decent fruit, creme brulee, slight acidity and a nice finish. This gets a bit better after it warms up.

With roots in this area going back to 1965, Rodney Strong Vineyards was the first to release a Chardonnay with the Chalk Hill name on the label. Officially established as an AVA in 1983, Chalk Hill was named for its reflective white soils.

Barrel fermentation in new and seasoned French oak added toasty vanilla and spice complexities. Creamy and rich on the palate. Encouraging secondary fermentation adds additional complexity, and in the glass the wine is both creamy and crisp, with ripe apple, Meyer lemon, wet stone, and spiced vanilla flavors.

Rodney Strong s 2009 Chardonnay Reserve is a gorgeous wine laced with apricots tangerine mint flowers and spices. The aromas and flavors are given additional dimensions of volume through aging in French oak barrels (26% new) and full malolactic fermentation. Though quite lush at first the wine finds its minerality and focus on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016. Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

Rodney Strong Vineyards in Sonoma has some of the most extensive vineyard holdings in the county. To make their Reserve Chardonnay, Rick Sayre works with Consulting Oenologist David Ramey to select individual grape lots from their best Russian River Valley vineyards. Each lot is individually barrel fermented in French oak. Frequent lees stirring during the 13 months of barrel aging adds a creamy texture and complexity. It's full-bodied and lush with tropical fruit and compelling richness. Wine Spectator scored this 92 points saying "A rich, creamy style that features ripe fig, peach and honeydew melon, with broad, expansive texture and good length. Retains its elegance and finesse, ending with a smoky roasted marshmallow note. Drink now through 2018."

A perfect example of Sonoma Chardonnay, full of bright peach fruit, crisp, lively and smooth. Hard to believe that one can still find good Sonoma Chard at this price!
