Dark and brooding with big yet suave tannins that give this a high end Bordeaux like mouth feel. Very fresh and with very fine balance to the creamy mouthfeel. The acidity is bright but integrated adding to the polish yet lean feel. Lush with good depth of flavor, this is a seductive style of winemaking that knits together deep fruit with good length in a suave polished style. This developed lovely green tobacco and green coffee nuances on the long finish. Delicious and really enjoyable to drink, this improved all night long 2008-2016 92pts

Second time I've tasted this wine. The first was at the Sonoma County Harvest Fair. Lost my notes from the fair but recall it being very good. Tasting it blind restrained my thoughts. This wine was very dark and muted at first take. It did have spice and black fruit as it opened up. Good tannins and balance but needed time to open out.
Nice, tasty oaky chardonnay. Very silky mouthfeel with a pleasant creaminess. Lots of oak, vanilla and cinammon notes throughout. Spiced red apple cider flavors on the finish.
Heavy heavy butter. Poor finish.
To me this was a very dry wine, which I like very dry wines, full bodied, with small hints of oak at the end.
Our founder, Rod Strong, spearheaded the establishment of the Chalk Hill appellation in 1983. He recognized the region as distinct from the rest of Russian River Valley for the unique chalky white soils, which impart a subtle mineral character to wines grown there. The 2005 vintage began with a rather late bud break during an unseasonably cool and wet spring. Record May rains luckily came before bloom for chardonnay, and an average to cool summer further contributed to a harvest about three weeks later than normal. Fortunately harvest conditions were rain free with ideal temperatures for all varieties, and we finished bringing in our chardonnay by the 18th of October. Each Chardonnay vineyard, and each "block" from within each vineyard, was harvested separately, vinified separately, and evaluated individually as a potential Reserve component. After fermenting in new French oak barrels, this wine was aged "sur lie", or on its spent yeast cells, for 20 months. Frequent stirring of these lees added a creamy texture to an already full-bodied wine, making for a rich, plush mouth feel. Powerful aromas of vanilla, baked apple, and spice join stone fruits and toasty oak on the palate, adding up to a compelling and thoroughly satisfying experience for true Chardonnay lovers.
