Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County 2006
Editorial Reviews for Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County
The nose on this shows unexpected restraint with pencil lead, black currants, cocoa, licorice and hints of dried thyme slowly rising from the glass. In the mouth this is rather concave at first with nice acids popping from the fruit across the mid-palate. It’s a taut, almost lean wine that keeps its considerable power hidden away. The tannins are very fine and very ripe and the oak influence, though noticeable is very nuanced and allows the pure, succulent fruit to take center stage. The finish shows a real release of inner mouth perfume and the tannins become immediately noticeable, while flavors of black fruit and cedar spice linger on the palate. This is a deceptively lithe wine with very appealing and fresh Cabernet flavors that somehow conceal the formidable alcohol of this wine without ever becoming cloying or over the top. Very refined and complex with excellent potential for improvement over 7-10 years in the cellar. 93pts
A nice surprise for this cabernet. I've tried several other varietals from Rodney Strong and have yet to be let down.
Smooth and inviting slightly briny nose full with blackberries. Flavors have a hint of sweetness to them, are full and rich, silky texture and chewy tannins make for a great mouthfeel. A very nice cab.
dark fruit characteristics, blackberries, black plums, and currants, very fruit forward and easy to drink, appeared to be a classic california cabernet
This is a Christmas wine. Aromas of gingerbread cookies and clove. The palate is like a fruit filled pumpkin pie with back-end spice and maple syrup. Very dry and warms you up like a burning yule log. I paired it with Kung Pao marinated skirt steak and it was a perfect fit.
Dusty sweet cherries on the nose. Perfectly balanced eucalyptus, oak, and spice with a light mouthfeel but strong christmas spice finish. Ohh wee!
I found this wine at my local grocery store for $8. This was a very good wine for that price. Dark red purple color with aromas of blackberry. Noted hints of cassis and oak with a balanced background of ripe, tame tannins. Very nicely made Cabernet.
Violet in color with dried cranberries, cedar and a bit of vanilla on the nose. Medium body with dried sweet red fruit and berries with hints of pepper on the long smooth finish. Paired with pasta marinara added to the peppery finish.

91 Points - Wine and SpiritsCool dark cherry flavors build on this wine's lovely texture. It's light in weight, but the flavor continues straight through, finishing on resinous spice. Ready to drin
Aromas of blackberry, cocoa, and cedar lead to a rich, layered mouthfeel, replete with black cherry, vanilla, and cassis, and structured with lush, mature tannins Enjoy this seductive cabernet sauvignon now and over the next several years
The Rockaway Vineyard is 125 acres and turns out dense, small berries with intense flavors that are some the very best Alexander Valley produces. Rodney Strong’s flagship single vineyard Rockaway Cab, is a full-bodied, ultra-ripe Cab that over-achieves every vintage. This 2006 was scored a whopping 96 points by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. They said "Impresses for the sheer power of ripeness, but also and especially for the structure. The flavors of blackberries, cherries, currants, cocoa, herbs and sweetly smoked oak are beautiful and complex, yet the tannin-acid balance is near perfect. This single-vineyard wine is one of the finest Sonoma County Cabernets of the vintage. Should age effortlessly through 2014, growing purer and more elegant." Very limited!
94 Points - Wine Spectator"This well-proportioned red is intense, concentrated and richly flavored, with layers of loamy currant, anise, blackberry, mineral and sage that are full-blown and powerful, yet not without a measure of finesse and elegance."-James Laube, February 28, 2010.
