Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

It's been over thirty vintages since Harry and Maggie Wetzel moved their family up from Southern California so that their children could "experience swimming in a river." After years of producing distinctive, dynamic wines, the 3rd generation of Wetzels is now going green, planting cover crops, installing solar panels and digging caves for natural insulation. Cool.

Rodney Strong Vineyards:
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. It was the first vineyard to plant Chardonnay in Chalk Hill (1965), and the first to release it (1977). It was also the first to plant Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley (1968) and the first to make a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County (released in 1974). ... Read more
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. Success didn’t come overnight: hard work and perseverance, coupled with a strong business sense and tender loving care, allowed the vineyard to prosper. When Tom Klein purchased the vineyard in 1989, a major overhaul was planned, and in a short 10 years, sales grew over 600% to 500,000 cases. Today, Rick Sayre, David Ramey, Greg Morthole, and Justin Seidenfeld, winemakers at Rodney Strong Vineyards, source grapes from over 1,000 acres of vines throughout Sonoma County, across 14 estate vineyards from Alexander Valley, the Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill, and Sonoma Coast. All of these high-quality grapes have allowed the winery to become the success that it is today. Read less

A very nice Cabernet Sauvignon that is more than acceptable for an every day occasion. The wine has enough complexity to mix with most foods but is not over powering. Bought it at CostCo for $11.99 which is a great price.

Of the cabs I've tried, I like this one quite a bit. It isn't quite the full-bodied wine that others might like--it has a heavy fruit (mostly plum and black cherry). The tanins, here, aren't excessive. A slight chill makes it quite lively.

Slightly hot nose and bright fruit. Good price, pleasant but slightly rough tannins keep it from getting a better rating from me.

Slightly hot, earthy nose. Good, dense fruit, fairly well balanced, especially for a 2005, so many of which are medicinal and over ripe. Pretty decent, and if you're looking for '05 recommended...

A bit on the dry side for a cabernet, but not too bad.

The Alexander Valley signature, or terroir, is evident in this delicious cabernet: bold fruit aromas and flavors centered on red plum and boysenberry, and a rich and mouthfilling texture with soft tannins, all of which we’ve framed in the finest oak barrels for 18 months.

Wine Tasting NotesAromas of blackberry, cocoa, and cedar lead to a rich, layered mouthfeel, replete with black cherry, vanilla, and cassis, and structured with lush, mature tannins.
