Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Alexander's Crown Vineyard produced the first Vineyard Designated Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County. Planted by Rod Strong in 1971, the first vintage was the unforgettable 1974, which placed Sonoma County, and the Alexander's Crown, indelibly on "the map", not to mention garnering top honors by winning the Sweepstakes award at the Sonoma County Harvest Fair. Since then, it has continued to gain prominence over the years. The Crown enjoys the coolest growing conditions of our cabernet vineyards, a major factor in its distinctive flavor profile. We grow 3 different clones of cabernet in Clough, Pleasanton, and Positas series soils, all gravelly loams with slopes in almost every direction. Every change in soil, slope, and direction provides opportunities for complexity, and in keeping with our philosophy, each unique section of the Crown vineyard is harvested separately, vinified separately, and reassembled artfully into the multifaceted cabernet that we've known for thirty years. Blackberry, red currant, and fresh earth are core flavors with the Crown, and are accented by hints of mint and herbs. 20 months in primarily French oak adds a subtle toasty spice component, and both rounds and softens this elegant, Bordeaux d Cabernet into a graceful expression of the varietal that will entreat you to enjoy another glass. Drink this classic "collector's" Cabernet Sauvignon over the next 4 to 8 years.2004 Acclaim: GOLD - International Eastern Wine Competition, June 2007 GOLD, 92 Points, "Exceptional" - BTI 2008 World Wine ChampionshipsSugar: 0.04Oak: 83% French, 17% American

Rodney Strong Vineyards:
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. It was the first vineyard to plant Chardonnay in Chalk Hill (1965), and the first to release it (1977). It was also the first to plant Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley (1968) and the first to make a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County (released in 1974). ... Read more
Founded in 1959 by Rodney Strong, Rodney Strong Vineyards has one of the richest histories in Sonoma County. Success didn’t come overnight: hard work and perseverance, coupled with a strong business sense and tender loving care, allowed the vineyard to prosper. When Tom Klein purchased the vineyard in 1989, a major overhaul was planned, and in a short 10 years, sales grew over 600% to 500,000 cases. Today, Rick Sayre, David Ramey, Greg Morthole, and Justin Seidenfeld, winemakers at Rodney Strong Vineyards, source grapes from over 1,000 acres of vines throughout Sonoma County, across 14 estate vineyards from Alexander Valley, the Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill, and Sonoma Coast. All of these high-quality grapes have allowed the winery to become the success that it is today. Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Lots of green in this one. Others at dinner party liked it though. Of the 3 bottles I brought, this one was my least favorite by a long shot. Typical Rodney Strong cab, but a lot of bitter green flavors.

Red fruit, currant, violets, and a little anise in the nose. Good tannins, relatively full body with some spice on a longer finish.

The Alexander Valley signature, or terroir, is evident in this delicious cabernet: bold fruit aromas and flavors centered on red plum and boysenberry, and a rich and mouthfilling texture with soft tannins, all of which we’ve framed in the finest oak barrels for 18 months.
