A slow start, but it kicks in. Very thick, dripping with dark fruits. Needs to age. Excellent finish - very powerful. (Tasted as part of a marathon at the Wines from Spain trade event.)
A city girl with country roots: Delicate almost-prune and wildflowers on the nose, petal soft in the mouth with fresh touches of wet weeds, eucalyptus, and distant smoke beneath the pleasing red fruit. Balanced, gentle & lovely.

VARIETIES: 85% Tempranillo, 4% Garnacha, 11% Graciano. 30 years old vines; 1,5 Kg. per vine. AGEING: In French oak barrels. 50% new and 50% one wine. 16 months in barrel and 20 months in bottle. The Rioja region of Spain produces one of the world's finest, and most long lived wines; Rioja. Rioja's renaissance, in the latter half of the 19th century, was a direct result of the phyloxera bug that decimated vineyards around the globe. The wines here actually have much more in common with Chianti. Both wines are blend relying heavily on one grape, in this case Tempranillo. Like Chianti's Sangiovese, Tempranillo usually produces a relatively high acid wine of medium to medium-full body. Tempranillo tends to produce wines with a dusty, leathery edge to its raspberry and blackberry fruit tones. With additions of Graciano, Mazuela and Grancha, the wines of Rioja can take on additional layers of flavor and aroma, but the tradition of extended oak aging for Rioja's great wines contributes to an even more obvious imprint. The predominant aromas of this Rioja are: red berry fruit or black fruit and oak in the background, almost imperceptible. Sweet spices and mineral notes bringing complexity, balsamic touches giving freshness. The palate is where this great wine shows through; Full, ample, with definition. Savoury, fresh fruit flavour, long, with sweet, softly integrated tannins, a sensation of volume and freshness as aftertate an expensive wine at $48 per bottle but worth it a definitve buy!
