Rockwell Brown Red Mountain 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

2010 was one of the coolest vintages on record in Washington State with the growing season registering about 10% fewer heat units than average. Although ripening was delayed 2 to 3 weeks, a long, warm post-veraison period allowed the grapes to fully mature. This meant the fruit had great acid retention and developed intense flavor and color, which resulted in fruitier, more structured wines with nice acidity and great varietal character. Grapes are from the Red Mountain AVA vineyards of Hedges and Rockwell Brown. It was fermented for 7 to 8 days on skins then drained and pressed to oak barrels, where it went through malo-lactic fermentation. It was 100% barrel aged for an average of 14 months in about 40% medium plus toasted new oak consisting of 60% American, 37% French and 3% Hungarian. Tasting notes: Dark almost black-purple color. The wine has an intriguing blend of ripe cantaloupe melon, mincemeat, toast, sweet smoke, clove and ripe black cherry. The flavors are similar to the aromas: spicy with ripe, sweet fruit underneath. This is a big, fairly tannic wine with nice acidity and some barrel roundness and sweetness to balance the bigger structure. A long, long finish, this wine just keeps evolving in the glass.

Hedges Family Estate:
We used inspiration and determination to create a distinctive place to grow the grapes that We hoped would be well-suited to the terroir. Building a French chateau was a natural way to bring our Old World family's heritage to Eastern Washington.
