Rockpile Winery Mauritson Zinfandel Rockpile Westphall Ridge Vineyard 2008
This vineyard is characterized by its perfect western sun exposures, red volcanic soil, and steep slope. The sun exposure provides phenolic maturity without over ripe flavors. The soil composition and extreme slope are what really set this Zinfandel apart. The result of deep root systems and stressed vines, the nose is blend of minerals and spices. The tannins are very well integrated, allowing you to appreciate the full array of flavors being set forth by this wine.
Editorial Reviews for Rockpile Winery Mauritson Zinfandel Rockpile Westphall Ridge Vineyard
Candied watermelon and a touch of cocoa are a bit of an odd combination on the nose. In the mouth, this is fruity and simple if very precise, with lovely purity to the fruit. This definitely seems a bit simple but purely rendered, with ripe tannins and a tart strawberry note on the finish. 89 points
Quite dark purple with red edge color. Not the most pleasant nose on first check, but that seems to blow off after a few minutes and I get flowery berry hints. Tame blackberry tastes on the tip of the tongue, but then quickly evolve into a smooth mint sensation without the sweetness. Firm tannin and acid are enjoyable. I’m not sure this one is a long ager, but I look forward to trying it again in a year or two.
