Rockpile Winery Mauritson Zinfandel Rockpile Jack's Cabin 2009

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Deep and jammy on the nose which is nicely smoky with some mineral notes and lots of juniper, cigar wrapper and briar wood spice notes. Polished and clear with wonderful fruit on entry. This is all about Smith brothers black cherry cough drops in the mouth, tangy and deep, supported by fine grained yet firm tannins and nicely integrated acids, that keep the richness and plushness here in check. Some black tea and chocolate notes emerge on the finish along with a bit of peppery spice but this is one big, smooth, fruit driven wine at its core. There’s a lovely balance between all the fruit and the underlying structure. 92pts

With over 270 acres of estate vineyards and close relationships with longtime growers throughout Sonoma County, we are able to source and manage our favorite blocks from each vineyard throughout the growing season and select the most premium fruit during harvest. Each vineyard and appellation we source from carry particular qualities in either the terroir or the farming style that we look for when considering a Mauritson wine release. Six generations of farming has taught us a few things about choosing premium fruit! Each harvest, the best from our 230 acres throughout the Dry Creek and Alexander Valleys is reserved for our Estate Wines. These wines, which include our signature Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon, showcase the fruit-forward, floral and spice-driven characteristics attributed to these appellations. Winemaking may have been the logical evolution in our family’s long history of farming in the Dry Creek Valley, however, it took an absence from the valley and attention to those inner voices that led Clay Mauritson back to these same vineyards that he spent planting, tending and picking as a teen. What he came to realize was that he already had a lifetime of understanding about the subtleties and strengths of each micro-climate within the Dry Creek, Rockpile and Alexander Valleys. The only thing left was to DREAM BIG! Tasting Room We are open daily from 10-5. Group Tasting by Appointment, Handicap Accessible, Picnic Facilities, Wine Tasting, Wine Tours by Appointment. Winemaker Notes - Our 2007 Zinfandel is a veritable explosion of fruit, jam packed with strawberries, cherries and raspberries and laced throughout with hints of cocoa, cola and baking spices. The palate is rich and chewy and delivers more of the ripe berry fruit and spicy nuances found in the aromas. The texture and weight are exceptional and the overall wine is a classic example of the concentration and elegance that defines our Rockpile Zinfandel.
