Rockhouse Vineyards Red Bordeaux Blend Meritage 2006

Member Review by MikeMiller:

Tasted this wine at the winery in the fall of '07. Best of all their reds, but still not terrific. Bought three bottles to see how they'd be with a little age. Well, drank the last one last August, and it didn't seem to improve much. Decent fruit, but I didn't care for the nose. Had a medicinal aroma. Not too bad, but not worth the price.

The first Rockhouse vines were planted in 1991 on a 200-acre farm owned by Lee Griffin and Marsha Cassedy. Over the years, the married couple had traveled widely for business as well as for pleasure. Wherever they happened to be -- California, Europe, South America, or Australia and New Zealand -- they always investigated the local wineries and vineyards. When they purchased their farm in Tryon, North Carolina, in 1989, it was with the intention of planting grapes. The Rockhouse philosophy of winemaking is to produce small quantities of naturally crafted wines. Winemaking starts in the vineyard with low yields of concentrated fruit. Constant experimentation with oak barrels and native yeast fermentation techniques will continue to enhance our wines. Hours of Operation: The winery is open for tours and tastings Thursday through Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., or by appointment. Closed January, February, and major holidays. Read less
