Winemaker's Notes:

Tasting Notes: Our darkest, ripest, richest Cabernet offering to date, the Rocca 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon offers very dark blackberry and black raspberry aromas intermingled with dark chocolate and spicy clove which abound from this Yountville vineyard. On the palate the wine is rich, warm, and full-bodied, with a soft texture from start to finish. Mixing with the velvety texture are ripe blackberry, plum and dark cherry flavors with hints of smoke and baking spices that combine to leave a lingering impression of rich summer fruits. Winemaking Notes: Our winemaker, Celia Welch Masyczek, works closely with Sergio Melgoza, our vineyard manager, as they both believe that the art of making great wine begins in the vineyard. As a team they determine the picking date more by taste than analysis. After picking the grapes at the peak of ripeness, the Cabernet Sauvignon was carefully destemmed and gently transferred into a fermentation tank, where they fermented on the skins for just over two weeks. Aged in small barrels (50% new) for about 19 months, the wine was minimally filtered just prior to bottling in May 2005. The final blend is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Merlot from 100% estate-grown fruit. Vineyard Notes: The Rocca 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon was produced from 100% estate grown fruit on our 21 acre Cross Roads Vineyard, located in the heart of Napa Valley, at the corner of Yountville Crossroad and the Silverado Trail. The Vineyard is located on the bench land of the Vaca Mountains. The soils are a well-drained mélange of alluvial, sedimentary and volcanic soils. The vineyard is poised between the warmer up valley climes and the cooling maritime influence of the San Francisco Bay to the south, so temperatures during the long growing season are warm enough to produce perfectly ripe and flavorful fruit and cool enough to ensure finesse and balance. The true heart and soul of Rocca Family Vineyards lies in Mary Rocca and Eric Grigsby’s passion for land, community and family. They are a dynamic couple who have applied their business experience towards the pursuit of excellence in winemaking. Before becoming a vintner in 1999, Mary ran her own dental practice, while Eric is a Pain Management Specialist based in Napa. Mary is also the proprietor of the Palace Market, a small grocery store in Point Reyes, and together with Eric, runs the HealthRoots Foundation, which provides palliative end-of-life care to people with AIDS in Malawi. Under the guidance of Vineyard Manager Sergio Melgoza, Rocca’s farming practices are holistic, guided by the closely-connected twin goals of farming organically and sustainably to bring the vines into long-term natural balance with their environment. Winemaker Paul Colantuoni believes that 90% percent of winemaking is done in the vineyards, and strives to express the beautiful fruit from Rocca’s estate vineyard holdings in Yountville and Coombsville. He uses long, slow fermentations, frequent punchdowns, gentle pressing and extended barrel aging. The wines are bottled without fining or filtration to express all the rich varietal character of the fruit. Rocca produces a Cabernet Sauvignon ($75) and Syrah ($45), as well as Bad Boy Red ($32), a blend of Bordeaux varietals. Visiting Rocca Family Vineyards: Rocca Family Vineyards recently moved their office and tasting salon to a Victorian home located just off Highway 29, where they are in the process of building a winemaking facility. HealthRoots Foundation: Mary and Eric started the HealthRoots Foundation in 1997 to provide health education and palliative care in under-served areas of the United States and abroad, most recently in Malawi. This is a Gold Medal Wine Club Platinum Series selection. Rocca Family Vineyard’s darkest, ripest, richest Cabernet offering to date, the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon shows balance and delicacy through its polished flavors and elegant style. The 100% estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon received a 90-Point score from Wine Enthusiast magazine and was awarded a Gold Medal from the Orange County Fair Wine Competition. An exciting selection for the Platinum Series, the 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon offers very dark blackberry and black raspberry aromas, in addition to the dark chocolate and clove spice aromas which abound from this Yountville vineyard. On the palate the wine is rich, warm, and full-bodied, with a soft texture from start to finish. Mixing with the velvety texture are sweet blackberry and dark fruit syrup flavors that leave a lingering impression of sweet summer fruits. Partners Eric Grigsby and Mary Rocca, coming from successful medical and dental practices, purchased 21 acres in the Southeastern corner of Yountville at the border of Stags Leap District in 1999. Their Crossroads vineyard, located on the corner of Yountville Cross Road and Silverado Trail, is planted mainly to Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, with 1 acre of Merlot, and ¼ acre of Petite Syrah. In 2000 they purchased the Hearthstone Vineyard, a 9 acre parcel in the cooler Coombsville area, and planted it primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon, with an acre each of Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot. Winemaker Celia Welch Masyczek takes a natural approach in the vineyard. She says, “I constantly walk through the vineyards near harvest, tasting for flavor development and tannin maturity. I rarely bring my refractometer into the vineyard anymore.” Hazy, fairly opaque ruby, and unctuous in the glass, this varietally expressive wine has aromas of dark cherry, earth, dark bitter chocolate, amaro, cedar, vanilla, and toast. Rich and round on the palate, the wine has concentrated flavors of dark berry, cassis, and smoke. Other than low natural acidity, it is fairly well-balanced, and has a cedary finish with dark chocolate notes.
