Rocca Delle Macie Chianti Classico Riserva 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

The flagship wine of the zone from which it comes, and the maximum expression of that zone's particular features, the label proudly bears the Zingarelli name in order to highlight the strong link that the family has with the Chianti Classico area. 90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes combine to create this ruby-red wine with its aroma of blackcurrant and marasca cherries, with notes of Peruvian pepper and sweet spices. Its equilibrium makes it a suitable accompaniment for a range of dishes, but it is also a great match for a good seasoned cheese.

Appearance: clear - medium garnet Nose: clean - medium intensity - spices (pepper), fruit (black cherry), tobacco, leather Palate: Dry - high acidity - high tannin - medium body - medium length - fruit (black cherry), savory, tobacco, earth, oak Good, but lacking complexity expected from a 2006. Opened up more after a couple hours.

Film producer Italo Zingarelli established Rocca delle Macie in 1973 to realize a lifelong dream. Since then he has continued to expand and improve the estate and produce consistently quality wines. This Riserva bears the family name as their commitment to making the best wine possible. James Suckling scored it 91 saying "A silky and refined Chianti Classico with dried cherries, dark chocolate and hints of wet earth. Full body. Drink now or hold." and Antonio Galloni's Vinous scored it 90 saying "Dark ruby-red. Aromas of dark plum, cedar and violet show a heavy dose of torrefaction. More complex in the mouth, offering deep flavors of red berries, dark plum, graphite and herbs. Finishes smooth and long, with a distinct tarry element that's not to my liking in sangiovese. The grapes for this wine come from vineyards immediately around the estate's main building, planted on calcareous and light clay soils, unlike those of Fizzano, which are richer in sand."

This Riserva bears the family name as their commitment to making the best wine possible. The Wine Advocate scored this 2006 90 points and said "The 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva is a big, super-ripe wine loaded with black cherries, blueberries, French oak and spices. Stylistically, this is a concentrated, voluminous Riserva with terrific persistence and balance. It is one of the finest wines I have tasted here in some time. The Riserva spent 24 months in French oak. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018."
