Roberto Voerzio Barolo Brunate 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Powerful aromas of beef blood, cinnamon, nutmeg, a touch of rust, dark fruit, and macerated medicinal herbs greet the nose. This is texturally packed on the palate, rich and yet with a touch of austerity. Nicely rounded tannins supported flavors that show flashes of mint and something vegetal along with a big follow through of root beer on the finish. This shows just a touch of alcohol and dry, chewy tannins on the moderately long finish. There’s a lot going on here but this is awfully dense today. 90pts

This now cult status winery was established in 1986, when a young Roberto Voerzio decided to leave the family business to make wine on his own, with the support of his wife Pinuccia. The estate began with just two hectares (5 acres), but years of patient and diligent negotiations were rewarded with the acquisition of some of the most prestigious and historic crus in La Morra for the production of Barolo as well as excellent vineyards for varieties such as Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo and Merlot. At Roberto Voerzio, an almost fanatical attention and dedication is lavished on each and every vineyard, vine and cluster. High density planting (6,000/8000 vines per hectare), short winter pruning (leaving just 6-8 buds per plant), a green harvest in mid-July (reducing the bunches by more than 50%) and a second thinning-out in mid-August (during which each cluster is reduced in size by cutting off the bottom part and leaving just the full, more concentrated upper section) translate into drastically reduced yields, at little as 500 g per plant for the most prestigious vineyards. Roberto Voerzio’s viticultural philosophy is simple: work the vineyards with the utmost respect. No chemical fertilizers, weed-killers, fungicides or other substances are utilized. Weeds between vineyard rows are removed manually and each individual vine is fertilized by hand using cow manure or humus, depending on the specific needs of the plant. A non-interventionalist philosophy is applied in the cellar as well where fermentation takes place naturally (without yeast inoculation) in stainless steel tanks. After the malolactic fermentation is complete (also in stainless steel), all the wines except Dolcetto are aged in wood, using a combination of large oak casks and small French oak barrels. Nothing is added and the wines are not filtered. This meticulous approach both in the vineyards and cellar has granted Roberto Voerzio countless accolades and admiration from wine enthusiasts around the world, each bottle a masterpiece of authenticity. “The wines of Roberto Voerzio are often (mistakenly) categorized as “modern.” We don’t produce modern wines. Perhaps the approach we take in the vineyards could be considered progressive, but it’s really nothing new; growers in other parts of the world have been applying the same methods for years.” – Davide Voerzio Source: http://vinconnect.com/wineries/roberto-voerzio/ Read less

This is savory and complex on the nose with layers of leather, celery seed, and umami rich dried ham aromas but not much fruit. Smooth and powerful in the mouth, this is a shiny wine but at the same time it’s packed with nicely earth framed dark wild berry fruit in a muscular style. It’s a bit short and turns a bit oaky on the backend but it’s drinking awfully well tonight. 90pts

An intense ruby red with brown/orange hues the Brunate is giving off super complexity with aromas of blackberries and cherries laced with mineral, licorice, tobacco, vanilla and pepper. This is a wine for nose people, seriously generous and complex. Yet the palate is more delicate, definitely tannic but it suits the wine. Suitably big finish with a super long length. A gentle giant, the Barolo Brunate offers masculine characteristics with a feminine and beautiful touch. I'm excited about this wine, its very good QPR esp for a R.V.

The 2010 Barolo Brunate is incredibly silky and polished in this vintage. Pine menthol licorice black cherries and plums flesh out in a dark gorgeous Barolo loaded with class and elegance. The Brunate can sometimes be a bit hulking in style but in 2010 it is incredibly refined. The 2010 boasts striking depth power and richness. Antonio Galloni.

Aromas of blueberries and plums with hints of flowers. Full body with chewy tannins and a fruity finish. Very chewy. A little lean but pretty depth and structure. Better after 2015. James Suckling.

Good full medium red. Complex expressive nose offers redcurrant licorice brown spices wild herbs and dried flowers. Large-scaled deep and powerful for Brunate but with terrific definition and enticing minty lift to the red berry and spice flavors. Beautifully balanced Barolo with strong tannic structure and resounding length and grip. I love the combination of power and sweetness on display here. Stephen Tanzers IWC.

A rich explosive wine the 2009 Barolo Brunate hits the palate with masses of dark fruit pine menthol wild herbs cloves and new leather. Firm yet well-integrated tannins provide the backdrop for this stunning structured Barolo. The 2009 Brunate has class and pure pedigree to burn. When I was younger I didnt really get the Brunate but as I have gotten older my appreciation for this wine has grown. This is one sexy Barolo from Roberto and Davide Voerzio. Drink 2019 - 2034 Antonio Galloni.

The 2008 Barolo Brunate is beautifully balanced from start to finish. Freshly cut flowers, mint, licorice, hard candy and dark red fruit are layered in this utterly impeccable Barolo. Waves of fruit build toward a huge, dramatic finish supported by s... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. A Nebbiolo wine from Piedmont in Italy. 2008 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Brunate 750ml
