Robert Oatley Shiraz Mudgee 2007
Vintage notes: The 2007 vintage was a very good one for those producers who managed their water resources properly through what was an exceptionally dry and warm summer growing season. Our vineyards produced some exceptional parcels of fruit which we harvested at varying ripeness levels to provide a multitude of blending options post fermentation. Winemaking notes: Harvested in the cool of the morning and fermented at cool to moderate temperatures in order to retain fruit spice and varietal impact. The fermenting must was gently and routinely pumped over with care. Careful selection of appropriate American and French oak barrels has allowed the fruit to remain to the front while providing structure, gentle tannin and spicy flavor from the wood.
Editorial Reviews for Robert Oatley Shiraz Mudgee
Leathery and meaty on the nose with a sprinkling of soil tones and a hint of black pepper. On the palate this is surprisingly restrained with plenty of plummy fruit paired with subtle spice tones. It's got a touch of gritty tannin on the backend but is well balanced and offers good complexity and value. 87pts
lacking fruit - some cherry and black spice - middle of the road - needs more oomph...recommend passing on this one
2nd oatley wine tasted in a flight. lighter style, modest fruit, light pepper, reticent aromas, short finish. decent wine, but not worth the price tag. would be a good value at $9.99 or less.
controlled fruit bomb!
Animal, earthy, musty aromas lead to a very fleshy wine with a great rich mouth feel. Fruity strawberry and banana notes shine through. Very nice.
Over-priced and under fruited. Appears that the winemaker couldn't decide between an Aussie Shiraz or a Rhone style wine and ended up making a facile example of Shiraz that displays astringency, medicinal qualities and almost no burst of fruit.

Deep ruby with a bright rim. candied cherry and blackberry on the nose, with a subtle smokiness adding interest, Deep dark fruit flavors are brightened by a zesty mineral note but betray no rough edges. Finishes with inviting sweetness and straightforward, slightly jammy dark berry character.
