Robert Oatley Chardonnay Mudgee 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

A remarkable wine in the modern Australian idiom – bright stone-fruit and honeydew melon, restrained oak and a fine line of acidity. Hand-picked, whole bunch basket- pressed, indigenous yeast ferment in brand new French oak hogsheads. Delicious.

The Robert Oatley Vineyards winery is the Mudgee region’s largest and most technologically advanced facility. Located on the family’s Montrose Vineyard, it has a 10,000 ton capacity, 9.5 million liters storage capacity, over 2,500 predominantly French oak hogshead barrels and the world’s most technologically advanced bottling line capable of filling and packaging more than 10,000 bottles per hour. Bob Oatley’s winemakers, lead by Chris Hancock and Senior Winemaker James Manners, craft modern, authentically Australian wines intentionally suited to the American palate – wines that people simply enjoy drinking. In 2006, the family purchased the historic Craigmoor property on the outskirts of the Mudgee township. The winery, now a tasting room and visitor center, was established in 1858 and the surrounding vineyards grow some of the finest grapes in the region. Read less

Noticeable wood on the nose and butter/cream notes. Nice notes of apple/pear tart, fresh brioche. Smooth and creamy texture and nice flavors of buttery pastry of par and apple. Vibrant acid but kept in check. Hints of tropical fruits. Light smokiness and salinity. Really interesting mix of flavors. Nice wine! 90 pts.

This was light, a hint of sweet and refreshing. It was good in the fridge for one day, but sustained characters for three...just not as pronounced. Melon with a hint of lemon.

Polished, lively and appealing for its sunny pear, cream, vanilla and lychee flavors ... Drink now through 2016. -HS
