Robert Oatley Chardonnay 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

This is one of Robert Oatleys inaugural releases from an entire lineup of wines from Australia. Oatley becaue famous for launching the largest Australian wine producer, Rosemount Estates which he has since sold. Oatleys idea for his new label, Robert Oately, is to remain small and family owned and operated. His modern styled wines are very approachable even in their young age.

WINEMAKING NOTES: Numerous individual parcels of chardonnay grapes were night-harvested from the familys wide-ranging Mudgee vineyards and fermented at cool temperatures to retain aroma and flavour. A variety of winemaking regimes were employed to produce a complex, yet fruit driven style. Half of the blend was fermented in stainless steel, around a third barrel fermented and the remainder cold fermented then aged in one-third brand new French oak. A secondary, malo-lactic fermentation was induced for over half of the blend, softening the acidity and adding texture and mouthfeel.

The Robert Oatley Vineyards winery is the Mudgee region’s largest and most technologically advanced facility. Located on the family’s Montrose Vineyard, it has a 10,000 ton capacity, 9.5 million liters storage capacity, over 2,500 predominantly French oak hogshead barrels and the world’s most technologically advanced bottling line capable of filling and packaging more than 10,000 bottles per hour. Bob Oatley’s winemakers, lead by Chris Hancock and Senior Winemaker James Manners, craft modern, authentically Australian wines intentionally suited to the American palate – wines that people simply enjoy drinking. In 2006, the family purchased the historic Craigmoor property on the outskirts of the Mudgee township. The winery, now a tasting room and visitor center, was established in 1858 and the surrounding vineyards grow some of the finest grapes in the region. Read less
