The Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 after a family split with the Charles Krug Winery, which had been founded by Robert’s father.  After heading out on his own, Robert settled on land in Napa valley, and in particular the famed To Kalon Vineyard in the Rutherford district. The original plot in To Kalon Vineyard was only 12 acres, but today there are 450 acres under vine. The Robert Mondavi Winery also includes the Wappo Hill Vineyard, which is a 400 acre plot in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. Within a year of its inception, the Robert Mondavi Winery proved to be a true pioneer, not only with the establishment of his winery but also by introducing and popularizing the use of French oak barrels for wine, European wine techniques, and the bottling of varietal wines. Robert Mondavi Winery only uses French Oak barrels for storing wine, and his influence and success led to the practice’s prevalence. Among Mondavi’s greatest successes one would have to count the creation of the Fume Blanc moniker for Sauvignon Blanc as well as the introduction of his benchmark Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet. Today Robert Mondavi’s legacy is carried on under the watchful eye of his wife who works with the current winemakers Genevieve Janssens, Gustavo Gonzalez, and Richard Arnold to ensure that today’s Robert Mondavi wines deliver the elegance, appeal, and character that Robert had intended. Perfectly functional low-dollar wine. It doesn't taste like apple pie filling, but it definitely appeals to the sweet side.

Easy wine to drink. Easy oak flavors, decent fruit. Pick it up if you want an easy-to-drink Chardonnay!

Way too fruity and rich. Very cheap tasting.

This wine is not as fruity as I had hoped, however, it has more of a spicy taste to it so the complexity of the flavors make this wine unique. It starts off a little bit fruity then finishes with a nice clean, spicy flavor. Different, but not bad. I would try it again down the road.

This wine's creamy, baked apple flavors have a light sweetness, hinting at salted caramels. It's balanced in a soft style, ready to chill for roast chicken.

Plenty of spicy oak in this ripely fruity, basically simple wine. Aromas and flavors veer to tropical fruits and spice; technically, it's dry, but it gives the palate impression of honeyed sweetness. Crisp acidity completes the package.

The emphasis is on fruit, especially citrus, melon and tropical fruit flavors with floral characteristics. Barrel aging adds spiciness and toasty, creamy nuances.

This unoaked, low-alcohol Sauvignon Blanc is really elegant, and shows how you don't have to spend a lot to get a fine wine. It's dry, crisp and rich in lemon, lime, pineapple and vanilla flavors, with a savory creaminess from sur lie aging. A brilliant value; production was 77,500 cases.

California's Central Coast valleys have ideal weather for Riesling, producing enticing fruit and floral notes enhanced by slight sweetness and a crisp finish. Enjoy this delicately spicy wine with appetizers, cold smoked meats, pasta or crab salad, and strawberry shortcake.

Tasting Notes:

Our Riesling was produced entirely from grapes grown in Monterey County, along California’s cool Central Coast. An especially rich, full-bodied rendition of the noble Riesling varietal, it exudes fresh honeysuckle, ripe peach, citrus blossom, and baking spice aromas with mouth-filling, honeyed peach, ripe yellow apple, and kiwi fruit flavors.

Refreshing floral, melon and peach notes highlight the enticing aromas and crisp, lightly sweet flavors of our Robert Mondavi Private Selection Johannisberg Riesling.
