Robert Mondavi Winery Chardonnay Carneros Unfiltered 1999

Winemaker's Notes:

Our 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is selected from our finest Napa Valley vineyards, sites that yield complex, long-lived wines. Each of these exceptional vineyards has a distinct personality - a combination of specific site, mesoclimate, soils, clonal selections and cultivation techniques -- that contributes layers upon layers of flavors to the wine. Opulent dark fruit notes of cassis, black cherry and berry reflect grapes grown on the deep soils of the Oakville bench. Nuances of spice, minerals, licorice and violet weave through the highly extracted, velvety flavors. We handcrafted the wine with a long maceration, 17 months of aging in new French chateau barrels, gentle barrel-to-barrel racking, and bottling without filtration.

  The Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 after a family split with the Charles Krug Winery, which had been founded by Robert’s father.  After heading out on his own, Robert settled on land in Napa valley, and in particular the famed To Kalon Vineyard in the Rutherford district. The original plot in To Kalon Vineyard was only 12 acres, but today there are 450 acres under vine. The Robert Mondavi Winery also includes the Wappo Hill Vineyard, which is a 400 acre plot in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. Within a year of its inception, the Robert Mondavi Winery proved to be a true pioneer, not only with the establishment of his winery but also by introducing and popularizing the use of French oak barrels for wine, European wine techniques, and the bottling of varietal wines. Robert Mondavi Winery only uses French Oak barrels for storing wine, and his influence and success led to the practice’s prevalence. Among Mondavi’s greatest successes one would have to count the creation of the Fume Blanc moniker for Sauvignon Blanc as well as the introduction of his benchmark Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet. Today Robert Mondavi’s legacy is carried on under the watchful eye of his wife who works with the current winemakers Genevieve Janssens, Gustavo Gonzalez, and Richard Arnold to ensure that today’s Robert Mondavi wines deliver the elegance, appeal, and character that Robert had intended. I thought it was over-rated for a reserve cab. I expected more. It wasn't offensive, but it wasn't particularly amazing, either, that it should have been granted any sort of reserve status. Here's to hoping the winemaker selects better lots for reserve in the future. D-{

Wow! Still drinking great in 2008. A beautiful rich, well made bottle of wine. Velvety on the palate with well balanced acidity and tannins. A mouthfull of black and red fruits with some tobacco and leather notes. Finish is long and smooth. Nose is robust and inviting.

Wonderfully rich, noble nose with hints of eucalyptus. Rich red and black berry fruit on the palate with some menthol. Lovely structure and mouthfeel. Great balance and in its sweet spot. Drinking very well presently. 97 pts. 5/26/12

Let me start with the great. For an 11 year old cab, I was surpirzed how much of the complexity remained. I did not detect any signs of its ending lifespan from the nose. A deep bouquet of dark chocolate, cherry and nutmeg. I detected a slight scent of lighter fluid, yet I have smelled this before, and not in a bad way. The pallet was nice and smooth, thought I could tell that this had a much better melding of richer flavors a few years ago. Now, besides my waiting too long to open this, it was not yet gone. I had a 8 year Meridian which went from amazing to gone in under 15 minutes. If you can find it, it may be too later

Bright ruby-red. Complex, sweet nose combines black cherry, blackcurrant, gravel, licorice and graphite. Silky, minerally and sweet, with terrific intensity and thrust, not to mention inner-mouth energy. Finishes with a firm spine of ripe tannins and very persistent, mouthcoating fruits and minerals. This is a full 15.3% alcohol but I never would have guessed it. Interestingly, associate winemaker Gonzalez told me he particularly likes the power of the 2003 reds here, ldquo;especially in their youth.rdquo; But this has real verve.

Soft and succulent blackberry and cassis fruit upfront, framed by squeaky clean tannins and solid oak elements. This is most notable for its voluptuous, velvety texture, which coats the palate with sweet flavors. Itrsquo;s not a big wine but a balanced, harmonious one, and a success for the vintage.

A superrich, polished, multifaceted wine, with layers of ripe currant, blackberry, herb, cedar and sage and a touch of pencil lead. Deep and concentrated, the flavors pour through on the finish, and while the tannins are chewy, the texture is supple. Best from 2005 through 2012.

Mondavirsquo;s reserve Cabs are always built for aging and the rsquo;92 is no different. Itrsquo;s the second reserve Cabernet in the past several years (we gave the rsquo;90 the same score) to receive 91 points. This is a dense, compact red with layers of cherry, cedar and spice character and broad chewy tannins. Give it time. Try after 1998.

Full-bodied, with ripe, integrated tannins enlivened by excellent acidity. Harmonious layers of ripe black plum and blackberry fruit flavors with a hint of spice and taffy-toasted oak.

This flagship wine shows impeccable balance and finesse. It's well put together, as the couture people say, and drips with lavish, minty French oak. Soft tannins add interest as well as ageability. The wine is not lavishly fruity; instead, the flavor... Wine Enthusiast. A Cabernet Sauvignon wine from California in USA. 1999 Mondavi, Robert Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 750ml

Wonderful intensity, beautifully crafted, with richness, focus and purity of flavor, offering layers of rich, smoky, mint- and spice-laced currant and blackberry fruit. Persistent, potent aftertaste.
