Robert Mondavi Winery Chardonnay Carneros Unfiltered 1999
Winemaker's Notes:
Our 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is selected from our finest Napa Valley vineyards, sites that yield complex, long-lived wines. Each of these exceptional vineyards has a distinct personality - a combination of specific site, mesoclimate, soils, clonal selections and cultivation techniques -- that contributes layers upon layers of flavors to the wine. Opulent dark fruit notes of cassis, black cherry and berry reflect grapes grown on the deep soils of the Oakville bench. Nuances of spice, minerals, licorice and violet weave through the highly extracted, velvety flavors. We handcrafted the wine with a long maceration, 17 months of aging in new French chateau barrels, gentle barrel-to-barrel racking, and bottling without filtration.

Add your reviewI thought it was over-rated for a reserve cab. I expected more. It wasn't offensive, but it wasn't particularly amazing, either, that it should have been granted any sort of reserve status. Here's to hoping the winemaker selects better lots for reserve in the future. D-{
Wow! Still drinking great in 2008. A beautiful rich, well made bottle of wine. Velvety on the palate with well balanced acidity and tannins. A mouthfull of black and red fruits with some tobacco and leather notes. Finish is long and smooth. Nose is robust and inviting.
A special at the Capital Grill recently, truly surprised at the depth of this wine. excellent

Mondavi has also turned in a very strong effort in the good, but generally unexciting 1988 Cabernet Sauvignon vintage. In contrast to his compelling 1987 Reserve, the 1988 is much softer, and not nearly as concentrated. It is ideal for drinking over the next 7ndash;10 years. It has a gorgeously smoky, cassis, and vanillin-scented bouquet, ripe, round, generously endowed flavors, soft acids, and moderate tannins in its smooth as silk finish. Much more advanced and approachable than the 1987 Reserve, it is ideal for near-term gratification.

Seductive and stylish up front, with pretty, supple, coffee, currant, anise and sage notes, but you keep hoping for a little more focus. Finishes with a thick, chewy wall of dry tannins. Best from 2002 through 2008.

Deep, bright ruby. Very ripe, nuanced nose and palate offer cassis, minerals, graphite and licorice, plus a complicating note of tarry oak. Sweet, dense and rich, with classic Oakville cabernet flavors; strongly mineral- and soil-driven. Offers a lovely combination of fat, chewiness and sheer power. Finish with a mouthful of sweet tannins and excellent structure for a graceful evolution in bottle. This has turned out very well and should ultimately surpass the 2006.

The best Reserve offering since 1994 is the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, a 13,000-case blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Malbec and Petit Verdot. Half of the fruit emerges from the To-Kalon Vineyard. It possesses a pH of 3.7, and the alcohol is over 14%. Reminiscent of such vintages as 1990, 1991, and 1994, it boasts a saturated purple color as well as a sumptuous perfume of white chocolate, flowers, black currants, blackberries, and cigar smoke. Powerful, rich, and concentrated with admirable purity, a layered texture, and a 45+ second finish, this is a superb effort. Anticipated maturity: 2007ndash;2020+.

The full-bodied, powerful, pure 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is another outstanding effort revealing notes of spring flowers, toasty oak, creme de cassis, licorice, and graphite. One would have to go back to the 1990, 1991, 2001, or 2002 to find a Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve this impressive. The 2007 should evolve for 20ndash;25 years.

Supple and rich, bursting with ripe fruit in a generous style, with beautifully focused black cherry and currant flavors that are lively and elegant, tannins in the background, very fine texture and flavors that linger long and full on the finish. Great harmony, delicacy and toasty French oak. Drink 1992ndash;2000.
