Robert Mondavi Winery Chardonnay Carneros Unfiltered 1996

Winemaker's Notes:

Our 1996 Oakville District Cabernet Sauvignon reflects the great climate and soils that surround our winery in the geographic center of Napa Valley. Complex and muscular, this wine captures the unique characteristics of the region with deep layers of cassis and wild berries interwoven with nuances of cedar, vanillin and spice. The Oakville District has been the cradle of great Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons for over 120 years.

The Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 after a family split with the Charles Krug Winery, which had been founded by Robert’s father.  After heading out on his own, Robert settled on land in Napa valley, and in particular the famed To Kalon Vineyard in the Rutherford district. The original plot in To Kalon Vineyard was only 12 acres, but today there are 450 acres under vine. The Robert Mondavi Winery also includes the Wappo Hill Vineyard, which is a 400 acre plot in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. Within a year of its inception, the Robert Mondavi Winery proved to be a true pioneer, not only with the establishment of his winery but also by introducing and popularizing the use of French oak barrels for wine, European wine techniques, and the bottling of varietal wines. Robert Mondavi Winery only uses French Oak barrels for storing wine, and his influence and success led to the practice’s prevalence. Among Mondavi’s greatest successes one would have to count the creation of the Fume Blanc moniker for Sauvignon Blanc as well as the introduction of his benchmark Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet. Today Robert Mondavi’s legacy is carried on under the watchful eye of his wife who works with the current winemakers Genevieve Janssens, Gustavo Gonzalez, and Richard Arnold to ensure that today’s Robert Mondavi wines deliver the elegance, appeal, and character that Robert had intended. RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Brownish inky color. Reserved nose, with medicinal and herbal notes. VELVET texture! Insane balance - huge, but so silky. Low tannins and acid. Long+. Juicy. Refined. Vanilla. Light smoke. Charming! Was decanted. My favorite wine to date.

Good saturated ruby-red. Sexy aromas of cassis, raspberry, tobacco leaf, cigar box and nutty oak (100% new). A step up in concentration and flesh from the appellation wines but not at all a blockbuster in the context of Oakville wine (this is 81% from To-Kalon fruit). Fat, mouthfilling and deep but quite closed today, with its serious tannic structure apparent. I picked up a very ripe note of almost honeyed tobacco as well as a floral high tone, a medicinal element and a leafy hint. This long and classy wine needs time to harmonize in the bottle and may ultimately merit a higher rating. These 2005s are carrying alcohol in the high 14s, noted winemaker Janssens, but the To-Kalon Vineyard generally produces fruit with pHs in the 3.6 range, which is on the low side for ripe cabernet from Napa Valley.

Deep, bright ruby. Very ripe, nuanced nose and palate offer cassis, minerals, graphite and licorice, plus a complicating note of tarry oak. Sweet, dense and rich, with classic Oakville cabernet flavors; strongly mineral- and soil-driven. Offers a lovely combination of fat, chewiness and sheer power. Finish with a mouthful of sweet tannins and excellent structure for a graceful evolution in bottle. This has turned out very well and should ultimately surpass the 2006.

Bone dry and utterly balanced, with deeply powerful, long-lasting flavors of blackberries and black currants and an intense, but integrated, coating of smoky oak. But it's also very tannic. Nothing soft about this wine. As fine a cellar candidate as any Mondavi Reserve in years. Should develop for 12, 15, even 20 years.

A wonderful expression of stylish Cabernet that's ripe, fleshy, complex and layered, highlighting ripe currant, wild berry and blueberry, with touches of cedar and cigar box. The flavors gain traction on the finish. Drink now through 2022.

The full-bodied, powerful, pure 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is another outstanding effort revealing notes of spring flowers, toasty oak, creme de cassis, licorice, and graphite. One would have to go back to the 1990, 1991, 2001, or 2002 to find a Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve this impressive. The 2007 should evolve for 20-25 years.
