Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Napa Valley 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

An intriguingly deep color leads to highly fragrant aromas and fleshy dark fruits, sage, bay leaf, and a gentle touch of black pepper spice on the palate with a savory finish that works seamlessly together. The lively freshness and good structure came easily with the cooler season, and patient barrel maturation provided exactly what we love about Oakville Cabernet: its dense rich mouth feel, complexity, and long finish. 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, 2% Merlot, and 2% Malbec.

The Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 after a family split with the Charles Krug Winery, which had been founded by Robert’s father.  After heading out on his own, Robert settled on land in Napa valley, and in particular the famed To Kalon Vineyard in the Rutherford district. The original plot in To Kalon Vineyard was only 12 acres, but today there are 450 acres under vine. The Robert Mondavi Winery also includes the Wappo Hill Vineyard, which is a 400 acre plot in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. Within a year of its inception, the Robert Mondavi Winery proved to be a true pioneer, not only with the establishment of his winery but also by introducing and popularizing the use of French oak barrels for wine, European wine techniques, and the bottling of varietal wines. Robert Mondavi Winery only uses French Oak barrels for storing wine, and his influence and success led to the practice’s prevalence. Among Mondavi’s greatest successes one would have to count the creation of the Fume Blanc moniker for Sauvignon Blanc as well as the introduction of his benchmark Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet. Today Robert Mondavi’s legacy is carried on under the watchful eye of his wife who works with the current winemakers Genevieve Janssens, Gustavo Gonzalez, and Richard Arnold to ensure that today’s Robert Mondavi wines deliver the elegance, appeal, and character that Robert had intended. Clean, clear and well made, this wine is a classic expression of Chardonnay. Peach, apricot and cream aromas are medium in their intensity. The palate opens up bold and inviting, with powerful white grape and peach flavors, a good dose of fresh acidity to drive the palate, and a finish of bold fruit and creamy oak.

Rather perfumy on the nose with creamy raw almond undertones to the slightly spicy pineapple and pear fruit on the nose. This turns even more floral with air. Crisp on entry with nice bright acids driving an apple laden midpalate that picks up some creme brulee and key lime pie flavors on the backend. Just a slightly creamy edge adds textural detail to the fairly bright midpalate. the flavors are a bit simple and lack the brightness of the texture, but this is so easy to drink, finishing with a lightly veneer of oak spice and vanilla. Has a certain elegance to it but is simple. 87pts

Ripe and jammy on the nose with a nice base of well judged mocha, vanilla oak and a dusting of clove over soft, slightly minty black currant fruit. This is rather bright on entry with rich ripe prune and blackberry flavors supported by vibrant acidity, almost too vibrant in that it lends a citrus cast to the palate., though it does make this easy to drink. The ripeness eventually breaks through the acid barrier and the wood adds its weight on the backend before this fades on a modest, slightly dry and woody finish. Still it easy to drink and the freshness combined with the powerful fruit makes for an attractive package, though it tastes a bit like black currant jam on toast with cinnamon sugar. 89pts

This is quite oaky on the nose with tea, black spice and sweet vanilla aromas over some soft prune fruit. Rather large-scaled in the mouth with a soft, rich and creamy texture and some obvious alcohol on the palate. The mid-palate shows a lot of wood tannins. Creamy caramel and dried ginger accents to the cranberry and red cherry fruit pick up some mint on the modest, drying finish. 84pts

Young notes on the nose recall coffee cream with a buttery edge over jammy red fruits with hints of herb, leather and a touch of medicinal, cola syrup. On the palater this is balanced with prominent acidity and emerging floral inner mouth perfume. It’s a bit tight on the mid-palate with good extract and a chewy feel, yet this is not particularly rich feeling. There’s a bit of vanilla that peaks out on the moderate finish, which is balanced by notes of chocolate, tobacco and cassis fruit. This may very well improve with age as almost every Mondavi Reserve has, but I have some doubts about where this is headed. 88pts

From 6 liter This starts out a bit shallow on the nose with significant notes of herbs and tea dominating the aromatics. The fruit is there, rather compact, dark and not particularly distinctive. On the palate this offers an attractive blend of toast, gravel dust, light smoke and tomato leaf tones that add complexity to the fruit. It’s a touch lean, but is almost silky with an elegant, refined feel and a nice, crisp finish. 88pts

Write your review here, and rate the wine from 1 to 5 glasses above. From 6 liter This is quite obviously old with notes of carrots and parsnips on the nose that slowly fade into the background, adding a dusty vegetal character to the emergent black currant fruit. On the palate this is fully resolved with a silky feel and complex, layered flavors of sweet fruit, cedar, cigarbox tones and hints of freshly cut grass and roasted coffee beans on the long finish. There is no doubt that this is past prime, even in this large format, but the wine still is captivating, with excellent balance. 90pts

Here is a famous Cabernet from a California legend. Velvety layers of blackberry, plum and cassis highlight this Central Coast Cabernet Sauvignon. The complex interplay of aromas and flavors in the wine come from these vineyards planted in varied soils throughout California's Central Coast. The winemaker carefully selected the grapes to ensure rich, ripe character with soft tannins. The most recent available vintage will be sent, it may vary from the vintage indicated above.

Aromas of zesty citrus, green apple and tropical coconut are enhanced by the subtle use of oak. Ripe layers of fruit flavors unfold in the glass, with citrus and green apple leading to pear and pineapple. In the background, smoky oak deepens into creme brulee.

The wine displays aromas and flavors of creamy pear, green apple, melon and citrus fruit, mingled with notes of subtle toast, butter and yeast from malolactic fermentation and sur lie aging. The vivid fruit characters and hints of zesty, clove-like spice lead to a crisp, refreshing finish. Enjoy this delightful Chardonnay with crab cakes, simply prepared fish and poultry, and a wide variety of cheeses, including Brie and Camembert. 99% Chardonnay, 1% aromatic white varieties.

90 Points - The Wine Advocate"It is hard to find a better value than the outstanding 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon (which may even be discounted for under $25 a bottle). This sleeper of the vintage exhibits an opaque ruby/purple color as well as loads of cassis, blackberry, graphite, and cedar notes. Full-bodied, rich, and concentrated with silky tannins and a lush, generous constitution, this beauty is capable of lasting 10-15 years."90 Points - International Wine Cellar"Good deep ruby-red. Aromatic nose combines currant, flowers, menthol, mint and fresh herbs (I might have said garrigue). Then sweet and lush but suave and not at all exaggerated, with very good tannic support to the red fruit and lavender flavors."

The 2005 Private Selection Cabernet Sauvignon comes from cool-climate Central Coast grapes and has been blended with Syrah and small amounts of Merlot, Malbec and Petite Sirah. The wine has the sweet black cherry and dark berry fruit character that distinguishes California's finest Cabernet Sauvignons, and its ripe fruit is supported by velvety tannins and well-integrated oak. This is a wine of excellent depth, richness and length on the palate. Enjoy with a wide array of dishes, from standing rib roasts, grilled steak, and roast duck to spare ribs, lasagna, and flavorful hard cheeses.
