Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Napa Valley 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

An intriguingly deep color leads to highly fragrant aromas and fleshy dark fruits, sage, bay leaf, and a gentle touch of black pepper spice on the palate with a savory finish that works seamlessly together. The lively freshness and good structure came easily with the cooler season, and patient barrel maturation provided exactly what we love about Oakville Cabernet: its dense rich mouth feel, complexity, and long finish. 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, 2% Merlot, and 2% Malbec.

The Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 after a family split with the Charles Krug Winery, which had been founded by Robert’s father.  After heading out on his own, Robert settled on land in Napa valley, and in particular the famed To Kalon Vineyard in the Rutherford district. The original plot in To Kalon Vineyard was only 12 acres, but today there are 450 acres under vine. The Robert Mondavi Winery also includes the Wappo Hill Vineyard, which is a 400 acre plot in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. Within a year of its inception, the Robert Mondavi Winery proved to be a true pioneer, not only with the establishment of his winery but also by introducing and popularizing the use of French oak barrels for wine, European wine techniques, and the bottling of varietal wines. Robert Mondavi Winery only uses French Oak barrels for storing wine, and his influence and success led to the practice’s prevalence. Among Mondavi’s greatest successes one would have to count the creation of the Fume Blanc moniker for Sauvignon Blanc as well as the introduction of his benchmark Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet. Today Robert Mondavi’s legacy is carried on under the watchful eye of his wife who works with the current winemakers Genevieve Janssens, Gustavo Gonzalez, and Richard Arnold to ensure that today’s Robert Mondavi wines deliver the elegance, appeal, and character that Robert had intended. Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Rather perfumy on the nose with creamy raw almond undertones to the slightly spicy pineapple and pear fruit on the nose. This turns even more floral with air. Crisp on entry with nice bright acids driving an apple laden midpalate that picks up some creme brulee and key lime pie flavors on the backend. Just a slightly creamy edge adds textural detail to the fairly bright midpalate. the flavors are a bit simple and lack the brightness of the texture, but this is so easy to drink, finishing with a lightly veneer of oak spice and vanilla. Has a certain elegance to it but is simple. 87pts

90 Points - The Wine Advocate"It is hard to find a better value than the outstanding 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon (which may even be discounted for under $25 a bottle). This sleeper of the vintage exhibits an opaque ruby/purple color as well as loads of cassis, blackberry, graphite, and cedar notes. Full-bodied, rich, and concentrated with silky tannins and a lush, generous constitution, this beauty is capable of lasting 10-15 years."90 Points - International Wine Cellar"Good deep ruby-red. Aromatic nose combines currant, flowers, menthol, mint and fresh herbs (I might have said garrigue). Then sweet and lush but suave and not at all exaggerated, with very good tannic support to the red fruit and lavender flavors."

The 2005 Private Selection Cabernet Sauvignon comes from cool-climate Central Coast grapes and has been blended with Syrah and small amounts of Merlot, Malbec and Petite Sirah. The wine has the sweet black cherry and dark berry fruit character that distinguishes California's finest Cabernet Sauvignons, and its ripe fruit is supported by velvety tannins and well-integrated oak. This is a wine of excellent depth, richness and length on the palate. Enjoy with a wide array of dishes, from standing rib roasts, grilled steak, and roast duck to spare ribs, lasagna, and flavorful hard cheeses.

Velvety flavors, full of blackberries, currants and warm spices highlight our Coastal Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes were harvested from vineyards in Californias North Coast appellation. The complex interplay of aromas and flavors in the wine come from these vineyards which are rooted in varied soils. Winemaker Ken Shyvers carefully selects the grapes for our Cabernet to ensure rich, ripe character with soft tannins. This means that you will be enjoying a very approachable wine.

This Trio was inspired by some of our collector's favorite producers. Each combo includes 1 bottle of Sea Smoke 2008 Pinot Noir Ten Santa Rita Hills, 1 bottle of Robert Mondavi 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Napa Valley which received 95 points from the Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator, and Wine Enthusiast, and 1 bottle of Standish 2005 Shiraz Barossa Valley which received 96 points from the Wine Advocate.

Our Merlot displays all the attributes that make this variety so popular: bright aromas and flavors of smooth cherry, plum and strawberry with hints of cedar, black olive and spice-supported by a supple texture with fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. These qualities come from choice Central Coast Merlot grapes, with 9% Syrah for enhanced color and richness. The Central Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA), especially Monterey County, provides the temperate climate, cool breezes and moist alluvial soils in which Merlot thrives, developing ripe, fruity flavors while retaining good balancing acidity. We enhance the wine's pure fruit flavors with just a hint of oak for roundness and complexity.
