Clean, clear and well made, this wine is a classic expression of Chardonnay. Peach, apricot and cream aromas are medium in their intensity. The palate opens up bold and inviting, with powerful white grape and peach flavors, a good dose of fresh acidity to drive the palate, and a finish of bold fruit and creamy oak.
Rather perfumy on the nose with creamy raw almond undertones to the slightly spicy pineapple and pear fruit on the nose. This turns even more floral with air. Crisp on entry with nice bright acids driving an apple laden midpalate that picks up some creme brulee and key lime pie flavors on the backend. Just a slightly creamy edge adds textural detail to the fairly bright midpalate. the flavors are a bit simple and lack the brightness of the texture, but this is so easy to drink, finishing with a lightly veneer of oak spice and vanilla. Has a certain elegance to it but is simple. 87pts
Ripe and jammy on the nose with a nice base of well judged mocha, vanilla oak and a dusting of clove over soft, slightly minty black currant fruit. This is rather bright on entry with rich ripe prune and blackberry flavors supported by vibrant acidity, almost too vibrant in that it lends a citrus cast to the palate., though it does make this easy to drink. The ripeness eventually breaks through the acid barrier and the wood adds its weight on the backend before this fades on a modest, slightly dry and woody finish. Still it easy to drink and the freshness combined with the powerful fruit makes for an attractive package, though it tastes a bit like black currant jam on toast with cinnamon sugar. 89pts
This is quite oaky on the nose with tea, black spice and sweet vanilla aromas over some soft prune fruit. Rather large-scaled in the mouth with a soft, rich and creamy texture and some obvious alcohol on the palate. The mid-palate shows a lot of wood tannins. Creamy caramel and dried ginger accents to the cranberry and red cherry fruit pick up some mint on the modest, drying finish. 84pts
Young notes on the nose recall coffee cream with a buttery edge over jammy red fruits with hints of herb, leather and a touch of medicinal, cola syrup. On the palater this is balanced with prominent acidity and emerging floral inner mouth perfume. It’s a bit tight on the mid-palate with good extract and a chewy feel, yet this is not particularly rich feeling. There’s a bit of vanilla that peaks out on the moderate finish, which is balanced by notes of chocolate, tobacco and cassis fruit. This may very well improve with age as almost every Mondavi Reserve has, but I have some doubts about where this is headed. 88pts
From 6 liter This starts out a bit shallow on the nose with significant notes of herbs and tea dominating the aromatics. The fruit is there, rather compact, dark and not particularly distinctive. On the palate this offers an attractive blend of toast, gravel dust, light smoke and tomato leaf tones that add complexity to the fruit. It’s a touch lean, but is almost silky with an elegant, refined feel and a nice, crisp finish. 88pts

On the palate this is fully resolved with a silky feel and complex, layered flavors of sweet fruit, cedar, cigarbox tones and hints of freshly cut grass and roasted coffee beans on the long finish. There is no doubt that this is past prime, even in this large format, but the wine still is captivating, with excellent balance. 90pts

The Robert Mondavi Winery in Oakville is surrounded by the famous To-Kalon Vineyard with its acres of Cabernet vines up to 35 years of age. That's what makes their Oakville Cabernet so special. For this 2011 93% of the grapes were sourced from the To-Kalon Vineyard. A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, 2% Merlot and 2% Malbec. Fermentation and extended maceration lasted a full 38 days, maximizing the extraction of varietal character and complexity while keeping the tannins fleshy and supple. The wine was aged in 92% new French oak barrels for 20 months. Beverge Dyanmics Magazine scored it 95 points saying "Dark in the glass with plenty of dark fruit note on the noes, the wine is rich, with hints if spice and herbs; an exceptionally long finish, with great balance."
