Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2002
Winemaker's Notes:
Our Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon is made exclusively from grapes grown in this renowned region of Napa Valley. We selected four vineyards, including our own, that yield exceptionally pure flavors and silky tannins, the signature of the district. Layers of black cherry, currant, violets and sandalwood are enveloped in the wines lush texture; spicy complexity from French chateau barrels lingers on the finish. Readers looking for Bordeaux-styled elegance (a Margaux perhaps?) should check out the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap Vineyard... considerable precision, tremendous purity, medium body, and real intensity of flavor without a lot of weight or obvious structure. The wine’s balance is stunning. It should age beautifully for 12-15 years.

Add your reviewDecanted for 30 minutes. This wine is totally closed down. It is in the same phase that the 2001 Oakville was a year ago. Unfocused fruit, chalky and unbalanced. I would hold off opening any of these until next summer.
Pure Stags Leap. The color shows dark rich velvety crimson. The nose shows smokey cassis and dark fruits. The palate blossoms with bramble, extra dark blackberry, an aristocratic cassis, currant, French vanilla, tar and cocoa. The acid level is pure Mondavi, and the tannins are ironed out and all in a row....smooth. Fantastic mouthfeel....This is one cool customer. Some sweetness is present but not in a negative way. A smokiness that adds interest and a purity make this wine sing. The finish is long and precise. No green as mentioned elsewhere. A great effort indeed.
This has been a perennial favorite of mine. This vintage (my first taste) is no dissapointment. Medium dark color. The nose reveals some sweet dark red fruit. The palate has a bountiful lushness of fruits; deep dark currant, dark black cherry, some tar and tobacco. The tannins are amazingly resolved, but in the usual style, the acid level is a notch above to make it the "Mondavi food friendly wine" the founder has strived for. This multi-dimensional wine shows breed not common in its price range, hence why I love it year to year (in good years only). A super long finish which is as smooth as Huggy Bear. I am liking this alot. I can comment on a oak level a bit high which dries the palate a bit, but this should dissapate over time. I will try another one in 6 months.
God color. The nose has great cassis and blackberries. The palate shows a good balance of red & black fruits: blackberry, cassis, plums with some kirsch royal. A decent mouthfeel and structure holds this nicely. Its a big fat and juicy style of Cabernet that some from on, but its quite pleasant and enjoyable. Not a fruit bomb in an form. For $4.50 per half bottle it's gotta be one of the screaming deals of the year. For a night where a 750ml is too much and the vacuvin just won't do.

The rsquo;93 Reserve outperformed the rsquo;92 at the winery, revealing a concentrated, splendidly saturated dark purple color, sweet, intense aromas of chocolate, smoke, vanilla beans, and rich blackcurrant fruit. The wine tastes more extracted than the rsquo;92, with a sweeter, more expansive, glycerin-imbued mid-section and finish. Although it carries as much tannin as the rsquo;92, the tannin is riper as well as better integrated. The rsquo;93 is a 25ndash;30 year wine that ideally needs another 4ndash;5 years of cellaring.

As the only American in a flight of French Bordeaux approximately the same age, this reserve Cab more than held its own. If not for the still-remaining notes of vanilla sweet oakiness, you would not know it was from California. Luxurious fruits, clean, crisp acidity and a long, juicy finish of herbs, mint, licorice and style. Quietly structured and elegant, it is truly a special occasion to uncork this ldquo;ringer.rdquo;

Soft and succulent blackberry and cassis fruit upfront, framed by squeaky clean tannins and solid oak elements. This is most notable for its voluptuous, velvety texture, which coats the palate with sweet flavors. Itrsquo;s not a big wine but a balanced, harmonious one, and a success for the vintage.

The 1994 Reserve is an exquisite wine. The deep opaque purple color, and tightly wound nose and flavors still reveal enough profound aromas to mark this as one of Mondavirsquo;s most sensational efforts. The nose possesses a Margaux/Mouton-like cassis, lead pencil, floral aroma, backed up by copious quantities of blackcurrant fruit. In the mouth, my notes said, ldquo;great stuff.rdquo; The wine is full-bodied, layered, multidimensional and astonishingly well balanced, with an inner-depth and core of exceptional richness and intensity. All of this has been accomplished without any notion of obtrusive weight, tannin or alcohol. The finish lasts for 35+ seconds. Because of its luxurious quantity of fruit, this wine will be accessible young. However, for those who possess the discipline to wait 10ndash;15 years, this wine should prove to be a formidable Cab with a rare complexity, elegance and richness.

This sample was a knockout at the blind tasting of 1987 Cabernet barrel samples. This is undoubtedly the finest Reserve since the 1974, perhaps even the 1970. The wine shows great richness, a fabulous nose of smoky oak and jammy blackcurrants. The flavors in the mouth are terrific as this wine has astounding depth, a hedonistic level of fruit, and a tremendous finish. This is the kind of wine that California can produce and is capable of winning the hearts and souls of the masses. Anticipated maturity: 1991ndash;2004.

Supple and rich, bursting with ripe fruit in a generous style, with beautifully focused black cherry and currant flavors that are lively and elegant, tannins in the background, very fine texture and flavors that linger long and full on the finish. Great harmony, delicacy and toasty French oak. Drink 1992ndash;2000.
