Robert Mondavi Twin Oaks Zinfandel 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

fresh and crisp with grassy notes and fresh pear, light peach and grapefruit tones . Bright, a touch small in the mouth and perhaps just a whisper of unneeded sweetness. Round and fruity style, nothing wrong here simple, easy, with some subtle grassy and sweet herb tones. Short finish. Clean and simple 84pts

The Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 after a family split with the Charles Krug Winery, which had been founded by Robert’s father.  After heading out on his own, Robert settled on land in Napa valley, and in particular the famed To Kalon Vineyard in the Rutherford district. The original plot in To Kalon Vineyard was only 12 acres, but today there are 450 acres under vine. The Robert Mondavi Winery also includes the Wappo Hill Vineyard, which is a 400 acre plot in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. Within a year of its inception, the Robert Mondavi Winery proved to be a true pioneer, not only with the establishment of his winery but also by introducing and popularizing the use of French oak barrels for wine, European wine techniques, and the bottling of varietal wines. Robert Mondavi Winery only uses French Oak barrels for storing wine, and his influence and success led to the practice’s prevalence. Among Mondavi’s greatest successes one would have to count the creation of the Fume Blanc moniker for Sauvignon Blanc as well as the introduction of his benchmark Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet. Today Robert Mondavi’s legacy is carried on under the watchful eye of his wife who works with the current winemakers Genevieve Janssens, Gustavo Gonzalez, and Richard Arnold to ensure that today’s Robert Mondavi wines deliver the elegance, appeal, and character that Robert had intended. This offers up plenty of green fruits and grape fruit on the nose with a hint of mineral smoke but is a bit simple. On the palate it’s snappy and fresh with nice acid cut but like the nose is a bit on the simple side. It’s got nice balance and a decent finish, and while serviceable, isn’t very exciting 86pts

In contrast to the 2001 this edition of the To Kalon Sauv Blanc has more ripe fruit, but it’s also bundled up a bit tighter. There’s a light, smoky wood tone on the nose with hints of peach, lime and lime zest. With air subtle floral, geranium petal, and almost saffron like notes emerge from the glass. On the palate this is rich and ripe with softer acids than the 2001 but still very vibrant. It’s got a youthful, taut linear feel to it with excellent intensity of flavor. On the backend a salty, mineral note emerges and gives this an almost margarita like quality with the blend of citrus fruit and that geranium, vegetal tone. This really needs time to show at its best. 92pts

This is amazingly expressive on the nose with fresh field greens edged in mineral tones with a hint of smoke. The fruit is rich and green with melon and fresh fig tones balanced my touches of green hazelnut and olive. There’s a nice waxy element tying everything together. In the mouth this starts out feeling rich and round but the excellent acids give this uncommon definition on the midpalate and contribute to an almost blood orange tone. The backend has a lovely mineral edge to it that draws out the restrained, transparent fruit that is built on acids. On the finale bright, almost sweet fruit wins out. This is the best domestic Sauvignon Blanc I’ve ever had. 95pts

it is a nice white wine with a crisp taste that is not too sweet. it is perfectly refreshing on a hot summer day without the sweet after taste of most white wines.

Nice wine. Good grapefruit and lime mingling with grass, and smoke. A little burnt, ie heavy on the smoke/oak. Reasonable, but not for $40. We got ours for around $25.

I was disappointed, this wasn't light and refreshing like others that I have tried for the price; it had a flat lemony taste

Pale bright yellow. Initially exuberant aromas of pineapple and coconut dissipated with aeration to reveal more subtle varietally typical notes of peach skin lemon grass mint and crushed shiso. Supple and firmly built with a bracing lemony character to the mirabelle and white peach flavors. A note of vanillin oak adds interest without getting in the way of the wine s lovely fruit. Finishes with a lingering peach skin character. Stephen Tanzers IWC.

The cool vintage resulted in an unusually lean and streamlined but by no means uninteresting wine. It's subtly fruity with hints of citrus zest and grapefruit. The main note however is gooseberry-barely ripe acidic mouthwatering and white peppery. The finish is absolutely dry. It should develop earthy dried fruit notes over the next six years. - S.H.
