Editorial Reviews for Robert Mondavi To Kalon Reserve Cab
From 6 liter This starts out a bit shallow on the nose with significant notes of herbs and tea dominating the aromatics. The fruit is there, rather compact, dark and not particularly distinctive. On the palate this offers an attractive blend of toast, gravel dust, light smoke and tomato leaf tones that add complexity to the fruit. It’s a touch lean, but is almost silky with an elegant, refined feel and a nice, crisp finish. 88pts
Less fruit in the nose than the Mondavi Cab Reserve. Good structure. Better than expected in the mouth - bright red fruits, cherry etc. Good structure and a decent finish.
The color as dark old brick, not brown. (after 1.5 hours) The nose revealed slight vegetalness. On the tongue one get the feel of the elegance and breed, but initally slightly akward. Great cassis, cocoa, tobacco leaf, and tar. The fine tannins reside in the background. A admirable mouthfeel & the typical handling of acid a-la Mondavi; Deft. Moderate finish. The vegetalness never really disappeared. I would rate this a solid 90 if the veg was not present. All in all not a bad $30 drink, but I would be perturbed if I spent $125.2nd day- This evolved nicely. Much more plush and elegant. Great expressive fruits shooting upward through the opening of the glass; black cherry, currant/cassis, black plum, and boysenberry. The green has subside, but still slightly present in the background. No longer offensive. A bit longer in the finish as well. This wine is singing tonight. 89+ pointsPlan to open this 24 hours in advace. You will not be dissapointed.
Anyone opening this should do so 1 day in advance. The green streak is gone and the lushness arrives big time. Day 1: 88 Day 2: 91
About my 6th time with this wine and its best showing yet. I learned a thing of two along the way. Decant is a must. I double-decanted right back into its bottle about 1pm, to actually drink at 6pm.Beautiful lively but surely mature color with lightly rust colored edges. The nose shows of an elegant Bordeaux. Subdued cassis and graphite/lead pencil is all upfront. The palate shows some soy, cedar, leather, earth, tar, and tobacco. The fruit has taken the back seat, but by no means missing. Some more of the red cherry variety this time. Some black cassis with some very slight cola. Mouth fell was elegant and mid weighted. Finish was decent and tannins are fully evolved. Surely a Mondavi wine, but can easily trick me blind. This really showed beautifully tonight. Glad I have more. Oh yeah, I paid $30 and this was well worth it.
Great aroma of cherry and oak. Silky mouthfeel, not too heavy. A lot of tartness and tobacco on the palate, not much tannin. It was good, but I was expecting a lot more based on the price point. From all the raves on this wine, I have to think I'm missing something.
Excellent Cabernet. RMW has done a great job of consistently creating wonderful & highly regarded wines. I'll never pass on a RMW from To Kalon.

This is the premiere release of Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve handcrafted in our new To Kalon Fermentation Cellar. We selected fruit for the 2000 vintage from our finest vineyards and created the wine with traditional techniques, including hand-sorting of the clusters on tables, gravity-flow movement of the must and wine, and fermentation in a traditional oak tank. “We believe these ‘back to the future’ advances result in a powerful, concentrated wine with supple, integrated tannins, suggesting immediate approachability combined with incredible aging potential,” said Tim Mondavi. The 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve has deep, highly extracted color and dark fruit character of ripe black cherry and cassis. Violet, mineral and truffle nuances add complexity to the profound aromas, deep, rich flavors and lingering finish. Seventeen months of aging in willow-hoop, French oak château barrels added vanilla and toasty oak accents. We clarified the wine with gentle barrel-to-barrel racking and bottled it without filtration. Highly extracted dark fruit flavors of ripe black cherry and cassis. Violet, mineral, truffle and toasted oak nuances.
