The Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 after a family split with the Charles Krug Winery, which had been founded by Robert’s father.  After heading out on his own, Robert settled on land in Napa valley, and in particular the famed To Kalon Vineyard in the Rutherford district. The original plot in To Kalon Vineyard was only 12 acres, but today there are 450 acres under vine. The Robert Mondavi Winery also includes the Wappo Hill Vineyard, which is a 400 acre plot in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. Within a year of its inception, the Robert Mondavi Winery proved to be a true pioneer, not only with the establishment of his winery but also by introducing and popularizing the use of French oak barrels for wine, European wine techniques, and the bottling of varietal wines. Robert Mondavi Winery only uses French Oak barrels for storing wine, and his influence and success led to the practice’s prevalence. Among Mondavi’s greatest successes one would have to count the creation of the Fume Blanc moniker for Sauvignon Blanc as well as the introduction of his benchmark Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet. Today Robert Mondavi’s legacy is carried on under the watchful eye of his wife who works with the current winemakers Genevieve Janssens, Gustavo Gonzalez, and Richard Arnold to ensure that today’s Robert Mondavi wines deliver the elegance, appeal, and character that Robert had intended. From 6 liter This starts out a bit shallow on the nose with significant notes of herbs and tea dominating the aromatics. The fruit is there, rather compact, dark and not particularly distinctive. On the palate this offers an attractive blend of toast, gravel dust, light smoke and tomato leaf tones that add complexity to the fruit. It’s a touch lean, but is almost silky with an elegant, refined feel and a nice, crisp finish. 88pts

Less fruit in the nose than the Mondavi Cab Reserve. Good structure. Better than expected in the mouth - bright red fruits, cherry etc. Good structure and a decent finish.

Anyone opening this should do so 1 day in advance. The green streak is gone and the lushness arrives big time. Day 1: 88 Day 2: 91

About my 6th time with this wine and its best showing yet. I learned a thing of two along the way. Decant is a must. I double-decanted right back into its bottle about 1pm, to actually drink at 6pm.Beautiful lively but surely mature color with lightly rust colored edges. The nose shows of an elegant Bordeaux. Subdued cassis and graphite/lead pencil is all upfront. The palate shows some soy, cedar, leather, earth, tar, and tobacco. The fruit has taken the back seat, but by no means missing. Some more of the red cherry variety this time. Some black cassis with some very slight cola. Mouth fell was elegant and mid weighted. Finish was decent and tannins are fully evolved. Surely a Mondavi wine, but can easily trick me blind. This really showed beautifully tonight. Glad I have more. Oh yeah, I paid $30 and this was well worth it.

The color as dark old brick, not brown. (after 1.5 hours) The nose revealed slight vegetalness. On the tongue one get the feel of the elegance and breed, but initally slightly akward. Great cassis, cocoa, tobacco leaf, and tar. The fine tannins reside in the background. A admirable mouthfeel & the typical handling of acid a-la Mondavi; Deft. Moderate finish. The vegetalness never really disappeared. I would rate this a solid 90 if the veg was not present. All in all not a bad $30 drink, but I would be perturbed if I spent $125.2nd day- This evolved nicely. Much more plush and elegant. Great expressive fruits shooting upward through the opening of the glass; black cherry, currant/cassis, black plum, and boysenberry. The green has subside, but still slightly present in the background. No longer offensive. A bit longer in the finish as well. This wine is singing tonight. 89+ pointsPlan to open this 24 hours in advace. You will not be dissapointed.

Great aroma of cherry and oak. Silky mouthfeel, not too heavy. A lot of tartness and tobacco on the palate, not much tannin. It was good, but I was expecting a lot more based on the price point. From all the raves on this wine, I have to think I'm missing something.

Excellent Cabernet. RMW has done a great job of consistently creating wonderful & highly regarded wines. I'll never pass on a RMW from To Kalon.

Readers should search out some of the 80,000-case cuvee of 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa, a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. The dark ruby/purple color is followed by a wine with excellent purity, structure, and length. This fine example of a French-styled Cabernet with Californiarsquo;s sweet, ripe fruit will drink well for 8ndash;12 years.

Tasting Notes:

This is the premiere release of Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve handcrafted in our new To Kalon Fermentation Cellar. We selected fruit for the 2000 vintage from our finest vineyards and created the wine with traditional techniques, including hand-sorting of the clusters on tables, gravity-flow movement of the must and wine, and fermentation in a traditional oak tank. “We believe these ‘back to the future’ advances result in a powerful, concentrated wine with supple, integrated tannins, suggesting immediate approachability combined with incredible aging potential,” said Tim Mondavi. The 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve has deep, highly extracted color and dark fruit character of ripe black cherry and cassis. Violet, mineral and truffle nuances add complexity to the profound aromas, deep, rich flavors and lingering finish. Seventeen months of aging in willow-hoop, French oak château barrels added vanilla and toasty oak accents. We clarified the wine with gentle barrel-to-barrel racking and bottled it without filtration. Highly extracted dark fruit flavors of ripe black cherry and cassis. Violet, mineral, truffle and toasted oak nuances.
