The Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 after a family split with the Charles Krug Winery, which had been founded by Robert’s father.  After heading out on his own, Robert settled on land in Napa valley, and in particular the famed To Kalon Vineyard in the Rutherford district. The original plot in To Kalon Vineyard was only 12 acres, but today there are 450 acres under vine. The Robert Mondavi Winery also includes the Wappo Hill Vineyard, which is a 400 acre plot in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. Within a year of its inception, the Robert Mondavi Winery proved to be a true pioneer, not only with the establishment of his winery but also by introducing and popularizing the use of French oak barrels for wine, European wine techniques, and the bottling of varietal wines. Robert Mondavi Winery only uses French Oak barrels for storing wine, and his influence and success led to the practice’s prevalence. Among Mondavi’s greatest successes one would have to count the creation of the Fume Blanc moniker for Sauvignon Blanc as well as the introduction of his benchmark Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet. Today Robert Mondavi’s legacy is carried on under the watchful eye of his wife who works with the current winemakers Genevieve Janssens, Gustavo Gonzalez, and Richard Arnold to ensure that today’s Robert Mondavi wines deliver the elegance, appeal, and character that Robert had intended. The 2001s still rock. Deep red/chocolate color. Musty bouquet. Payoff is in the mouth. Incredibly smooth. Unusual, for a cabernet, cherry/berry fruit taste. However, make no mistake this is complex cabernet sauvignon. New sensations emerge as the wine moves through the palate. Finish is cinnamony (????). US$29.99 in 2005.

On track once again. Intense vibrant hue od brick with dark purple edges. Great true cassis and currant nose.On the tonque there was the Mondavi signature of balance and finesse. Great understated cassis, currant, and dark cherry cola. There is a clean smooth tannin/acid base that makes this good with food as well as on its own. A 30 second aftertaste completed the package. This is about a dozen times. I think this has emerged from its sleep and is willing to serve faithfully again.

My first bottle since 3/28/06. When I last left this wine, it was asleep. It has awoken.... I think.Decanted 45 minutes. Lots of sediment evident. The color has the purple tinge on the edges. It seems like a younger wine by looks alone. The nose shows 'correct' qualities of cassis, red currant, and camphor. The palate show a flinty lushness of red fruits, cassis, and tar. There is now a hollow feel to this thats disturbing. It has no mid-palate. Finish is decent.I'm a bit dissapointed in this apparent 5 year wine. When I originally had it back in February 2005 it was a different animal altoghether. I have watched is demise.I have 6 more that will do hamburger deck duty this summer. 86/100

I think this is asleep.I had my 9th bottle over the weekend and it was untypical of itself. Somewhat dull, hidden fruit. A bit astringent. In any case I will hold my last 7 bottles for until 2007.

A truly great bottle of wine. My wife and I BOTH enjoyed the powerful, yet smooth drinking cabernet. It was a little bright right out of the bottle, but settled beautifully after 30 minutes. There is a nice hint of the oak, and some depth to the finish... a grain that clung to the entire palette.

Wine Spectator ReviewA superrich, polished, multifaceted wine, with layers of ripe currant, blackberry, herb, cedar, sage and a touch of pencil lead. Deep and concentrated, the flavors pour through on the finish, and while the tannins are chewy, the texture is supple. Best from 2005 through 2012.

Sleek, elegant and polished. A refined yet rich and complex effort, with a mix of mint, currant, bay leaf, sage and dusty berry flavors. Firms up on the finish, where the tannins are firm yet supple and integrated. Best from 2009 through 2015.

Supple, complex and harmonious with a broad range of currant, anise, coffee, cedar and spice flavors. Picks up light toasty oak notes finishing with a smooth texture.

Saturated dark red. Moderately full-bodied. Highly extracted. Quite tannic. Earth, mineral. Rich aromas hinting of dark fruits and earth. Dense, gripping palate of granular tannins, with fleshy dark fruits. Big shouldered, young at present, but drinkable.

Ripe, dark, dense and earthy, with a rich core of currant, mineral and spice. Shows off pretty, toasty, spicy oak too, all the while maintaining a tremendous sense of elegance and finesse. Best for 2002 through 2010.

Deep, saturated red-ruby. Lively, complex aroma dominated by blackcurrant, licorice and tobacco. Sweet and quite deep but very tightly wrapped. much more difficult to taste than it was prior to bottling. finishes with tongue-saturating tannins. Very firmly structures; today, the wine's acids and tannins have not yet harmonized. A drier, serious style of cabernet, in need of bottle aging.
