Editorial Reviews for Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon California
Fine and focused on the nose with a simple expression of sweet blackberry fruit framed by hints of grilled meat and mint. A little sweet on entry, though nicely red-fruited, this turns a bit hollow on the mid-palate with lots of fruit tannins adding richness to the texture. It seems to lack a little intensity of flavor, but feels friendly enough in the mouth. 86pts

Fantastically fruity. Perfect for a special occasion.
The 2001s still rock. Deep red/chocolate color. Musty bouquet. Payoff is in the mouth. Incredibly smooth. Unusual, for a cabernet, cherry/berry fruit taste. However, make no mistake this is complex cabernet sauvignon. New sensations emerge as the wine moves through the palate. Finish is cinnamony (????). US$29.99 in 2005.
On track once again. Intense vibrant hue od brick with dark purple edges. Great true cassis and currant nose.On the tonque there was the Mondavi signature of balance and finesse. Great understated cassis, currant, and dark cherry cola. There is a clean smooth tannin/acid base that makes this good with food as well as on its own. A 30 second aftertaste completed the package. This is about a dozen times. I think this has emerged from its sleep and is willing to serve faithfully again.
My first bottle since 3/28/06. When I last left this wine, it was asleep. It has awoken.... I think.Decanted 45 minutes. Lots of sediment evident. The color has the purple tinge on the edges. It seems like a younger wine by looks alone. The nose shows 'correct' qualities of cassis, red currant, and camphor. The palate show a flinty lushness of red fruits, cassis, and tar. There is now a hollow feel to this thats disturbing. It has no mid-palate. Finish is decent.I'm a bit dissapointed in this apparent 5 year wine. When I originally had it back in February 2005 it was a different animal altoghether. I have watched is demise.I have 6 more that will do hamburger deck duty this summer. 86/100
I think this is asleep.I had my 9th bottle over the weekend and it was untypical of itself. Somewhat dull, hidden fruit. A bit astringent. In any case I will hold my last 7 bottles for until 2007.
A truly great bottle of wine. My wife and I BOTH enjoyed the powerful, yet smooth drinking cabernet. It was a little bright right out of the bottle, but settled beautifully after 30 minutes. There is a nice hint of the oak, and some depth to the finish... a grain that clung to the entire palette.

Superripe, almost port-like aromas of roasted plum, cassis, mint and smoky oak. Offers wonderful sweetness and richness in the mouth. Very long on the back end; the substantial tannins become apparent quite late and cover more of the palate. This winersquo;s suave finish makes the above Cabernet seem almost rustic in comparison. An impressive rsquo;96.
Deep, bright ruby. Very ripe, nuanced nose and palate offer cassis, minerals, graphite and licorice, plus a complicating note of tarry oak. Sweet, dense and rich, with classic Oakville cabernet flavors; strongly mineral- and soil-driven. Offers a lovely combination of fat, chewiness and sheer power. Finish with a mouthful of sweet tannins and excellent structure for a graceful evolution in bottle. This has turned out very well and should ultimately surpass the 2006.
One of the last released Napa Cabs, this wine exemplifies Mondavirsquo;s moderated approach. Itrsquo;s a big wine, but you can sense the pullback in this superripe vintage. Strong in blackberry and cherry fruit, but with a restrained earthiness and good acidity that keeps it from being flabby. Yet it will age with the best of them.
A brilliant effort from Mondavi, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and the rest Malbec and Petit Verdot) exhibits complex aromatics of forest floor, sweet black cherry and black currant fruit, vanillin and lead pencil shavings. Dense and powerful as well as elegant and concentrated, the finish reveals moderate tannins, and the wine needs another 4andndash;5 years of cellaring, but it has at least 25 years of upside left.
The finest Private Reserve since the 1991, 1990, and 1987, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is extraordinary. There are 8,000 cases of the blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, and small dollops of Merlot as well as Petit Verdot. A perfume of smoke, camphor, creme de cassis, cedar, and fruitcake is accompanied by a gentle giant of a wine. Powerful and impeccably balanced, with outstanding concentration, well-integrated wood, acidity, and tannin, and a long, nearly 60-second finish, this saturated ruby-purple-hued effort is a prodigious example of Cabernet Sauvignon. Anticipated maturity: nowandndash;2020+.
Good medium ruby. Smoky aromas of casis, game and currant leaf. Very suave and fine in the mouth, with less obvious sweetness than the 2002 but perhaps more precision of flavor. Notes of currant, coffee, smoke and game linger impressively on the firm finish. Classy Cabernet for the price.
