What to Expect

Merlot has gotten a bad rap as of late but there is no denying the wine's appeal. Packed with deep, dark berry fruit and nuanced hints of cocoa, herb and earth with a soft structure. Its velvety texture makes Merlot instantly appealing and an obvious alternative to similar, more tannic Bordeaux varieties.

Winemakers Notes

This wine's exceptional character comes from choice Central Coast grapes, primarily from Monterey County, a region that provides the temperate climate, cool breezes and moist alluvial soils that Merlot loves.
This wine displays classic Merlot attributes: bright ripe black cherry and plum aromas with subtle notes of spice and chocolate; soft, juicy, balanced flavors; a smooth, supple texture with well-rounded tannins and bright acidity.

Enjoy this wine with wild mushroom pizza, spaghetti Bolognese, Cornish game hens, grilled beef or lamb shanks.

Our Robert Mondavi Private Selection Merlot unfolds with lush varietal flavors and a silky texture, the signature of Merlot grapes grown in California’s Central Coast vineyards. Aging in small American and French oak barrels enhanced the harmony of flavors and added soft oak tones to the lingering finish.

Between the 2 wines that I had at a hotel concierge lounge recently, I liked this less than the comparatively priced Meridien Merlot 2004. If I tasted this blind, I may have pegged this as a Cab instead of a Merlot. The fruity characteristics that I like when I choose to drink a merlot was almost nonexistent here. It may be because the 'woody' characteristics of the oak overpowered whatever fruitiness it may have had. Mid-palate, you get a hint of spiciness and an overload of acidity.

There was nothing overwhelming about this wine, it was simply relaxing and enjoyable and went well with grilled chicken and dirty rice, triscuits tabouleh and cheese. The taste of oak tamed it and made it smooth through and through. This is a well-balanced wine. It's my new favorite cheap wine.
