Robert Mondavi Private Selection Bourbon Barrel-Aged Chardonnay Monterey County 2017

External Review by We Speak Wine:

Notes: Our 2017 Chardonnay is rich, creamy, and concentrated with a balanced acidity and lingering finish. The wine offers flavors of grilled pineapple, lemon custard, graham cracker, toffee, and vanilla bean with baking spices and toasty oak. Perfect alone or enjoy with grilled halibut and lemon-caper butter, roasted pork tenderloin, garden salad with gorgonzola and toasted pecans, shrimp scampi, and baconwrapped dates. WINEMAKING: We pressed the grapes as whole clusters, then cold fermented the juice in stainless steel to fully capture its fresh flavors. One-hundred percent of the wine was aged for nine months with American Oak Bourbon Barrels. OAK AGING: 9 months, with a portion aged in new and used American oak bourbon barrels

The Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 after a family split with the Charles Krug Winery, which had been founded by Robert’s father.  After heading out on his own, Robert settled on land in Napa valley, and in particular the famed To Kalon Vineyard in the Rutherford district. The original plot in To Kalon Vineyard was only 12 acres, but today there are 450 acres under vine. The Robert Mondavi Winery also includes the Wappo Hill Vineyard, which is a 400 acre plot in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. Within a year of its inception, the Robert Mondavi Winery proved to be a true pioneer, not only with the establishment of his winery but also by introducing and popularizing the use of French oak barrels for wine, European wine techniques, and the bottling of varietal wines. Robert Mondavi Winery only uses French Oak barrels for storing wine, and his influence and success led to the practice’s prevalence. Among Mondavi’s greatest successes one would have to count the creation of the Fume Blanc moniker for Sauvignon Blanc as well as the introduction of his benchmark Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet. Today Robert Mondavi’s legacy is carried on under the watchful eye of his wife who works with the current winemakers Genevieve Janssens, Gustavo Gonzalez, and Richard Arnold to ensure that today’s Robert Mondavi wines deliver the elegance, appeal, and character that Robert had intended. Notes: Our 2016 Chardonnay is rich, creamy, and concentrated with a balanced acidity and lingering finish. 2016 HARVEST: The 2016 growing season started with some welcome winter rains, a fairly early budbreak followed by warm spring temperatures and a mild summer. The grapes ripened steadily and uniformly and produced fruit with great concentration, sugar acid balance, and flavors. VITICULTURE: The fruit for our Chardonnay was sourced from California Coastal vineyards that enjoy a long, moderate growing season. These conditions produce grapes with bright, ripe fruit flavors and crisp acidity. The grapes were harvested at night and in the early morning to preserve ideal acidity and sugar levels. Harvest ran from September through October 2016. WINEMAKING: We pressed the grapes as whole clusters, then cold fermented the juice in stainless steel to fully capture its fresh flavors. Vintage: 2015 04/12/2017

Notes: This Chardonnay is the first and only Chardonnay that blends the craftsmanship of California winemaking with the Southern tradition of Bourbon Whiskey aging, resulting in an incredibly bold sensory expression. Rich, golden in color, it opens with intense aromas of ripe pineapple and toasted coconut with hints of toasted marshmallow and vanilla bean custard. Flavors of grilled pineapple, lemon custard, graham cracker, toffee, and vanilla bean follow with baking spices and toasty oak. Rich, creamy, and concentrated with balanced acidity and a lingering finish. This wine is perfect on its own or with grilled halibut and lemon-caper butter, roasted pork tenderloin, garden salad with gorgonzola and toasted pecans, shrimp scampi, and bacon-wrapped dates. 2015 HARVEST: A cool spring followed a mild winter, contributing to small, intensely flavorful grape clusters. Summer progressed with nearly ideal conditions and harvest was smooth, without any major frost events or heat spikes. Across the board, the fruit showed a great balance of acidity and sugar, and optimal color and flavor development. The resulting wines have superb color and show great depth, complexity, varietal intensity, and balance. VITICULTURE: The grapes for our 2015 Bourbon Barrel-Aged Chardonnay were sourced from Monterey County in California’s Central Coast growing region. Monterey County enjoys a long, relatively cool growing season with warm days and cool nights that provide ideal ripening conditions for grapes to develop complex flavors and deep, concentrated color. The grapes were harvested at night and in the early morning to preserve ideal acidity and sugar levels. Harvest ran from September through October 2015. WINEMAKING: We start our unique process with Chardonnay grapes carefully picked at the peak of ripeness from Monterey County vineyards. The wine is then aged and blended to deliver exceptional fruit flavors and complexity. Next, a portion of the blend is selected to be aged for an additional two months in a combination of new and used Bourbon Whiskey barrels. Our new barrels give the wine a deep, rich, toasty flavor. The used barrels, from a world-renowned Kentucky distillery, add vanilla aromas and baking spice notes. OAK AGING: 9 months, with a portion aged in new and used American oak bourbon barrels TA: 6.8g/L RS: 5.0g/L pH: 3.5 ALCOHOL: 14.5%
