Robert Mondavi Pinot Noir Central Coast Private Selection 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Pretty aromatic are a touch toasty with nice almond shell tones backing up apple blossom, lime, pear, and a touch musky papaya fruit. This is lean on entry with snappy acids that overpower the mid-palate just a touch. There are nice notes of crisp apple and again slightly exotic musky papaya fruit on the mid-palate with a touch of bitter minerality on the backend that become more aggressive and chemical like on the finish. This is a lean, style of Pinot Grigio where the acid is a bit too prominent. 83pts

The Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 after a family split with the Charles Krug Winery, which had been founded by Robert’s father.  After heading out on his own, Robert settled on land in Napa valley, and in particular the famed To Kalon Vineyard in the Rutherford district. The original plot in To Kalon Vineyard was only 12 acres, but today there are 450 acres under vine. The Robert Mondavi Winery also includes the Wappo Hill Vineyard, which is a 400 acre plot in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. Within a year of its inception, the Robert Mondavi Winery proved to be a true pioneer, not only with the establishment of his winery but also by introducing and popularizing the use of French oak barrels for wine, European wine techniques, and the bottling of varietal wines. Robert Mondavi Winery only uses French Oak barrels for storing wine, and his influence and success led to the practice’s prevalence. Among Mondavi’s greatest successes one would have to count the creation of the Fume Blanc moniker for Sauvignon Blanc as well as the introduction of his benchmark Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet. Today Robert Mondavi’s legacy is carried on under the watchful eye of his wife who works with the current winemakers Genevieve Janssens, Gustavo Gonzalez, and Richard Arnold to ensure that today’s Robert Mondavi wines deliver the elegance, appeal, and character that Robert had intended. Fairly light Pinot without much body. Some bright red fruit, cherry, strawberries, and a bit of acidity.

Nice easy drinking chardonnay. Not too complex, some oak, some butter, decent acidity with white peach, lemon zest and a hint of apricot. Very good quality to price ratio.

Lots of juicy fruit flavors with a nice hint of spice. The nose had hints of apple and pineapple which carried over to the taste. in addition there were hints of pear, lemon, lychee, and a nice spicy finish that reminded me of cinnamon and cloves. Will be buying more of this one

Came across very light with little to no flavor or bite. Some citrus came out after letting it warm up a bit but still not much here.

Savory herbal aroma, mineral attack with mild acidity in the mid-palate.

The nose reveals ripe apple, melon, citrus and tropical fruit aromas enriched by creamy malolactic tones, spicy French oak nuances and enticing baked bread scents. On the mouthfilling, creamy palate, rich tropical fruit flavors buttressed by toasty oak tones create a lush impression, which is balanced by a long, crisp finish imbued with the refreshing minerality typical of Central Coast Chardonnay.

Lush tannins with notes of plum and blueberry, hints of vanilla and spice, and finishes with a subtle toasted oak.

Our Riesling exudes the fresh apple, pear, orange blossom and litchi fruit aromas that make Rieslings grown in cool-climates so delightful. Monterey County's long, cool growing season produced grapes with especially concentrated flavors, giving our Riesling an impressive weight on the palate, despite its moderate alcohol content.

Good dark red. Aromas of black cherry, currant, plum, loam, chocolate, mint and graphite. Supple and fine-grained, with enticing currant, spice, menthol and mint flavors framed and lifted by harmonious acidity. Round, pliant merlot with moderate complexity but attractive balance and a seamless texture. The sweet finish shows some slightly gritty chocolatey tannins.

This pleasant Merlot is a little tough and gritty, but it’s rich and candied in blackberry and cherry, roasted almond and vanilla flavors. Give it some time to breathe in the glass.

A little simple in citrus flavor, but for the price, a pretty nice wine. Itrsquo;s the kind of crisp, dry white Irsquo;ve had many times at gallery openings and such, inexpensive, but with enough panache to satisfy a picky crowd.

A flavorful wine that captures the vibrancy of Central Coast-grown Pinot Noir grapes with its abundant layers of cherry, violet and spice. Light nuances of oak and silky tannins add complexity and depth on the palate.
