Robert Mondavi Pinot Noir Carneros 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This is fairly oaky on the nose and obviously so, with nice cherry fruit under the oak along with a hint of river stone and some vanilla bean. Smooth and understated, though with a certain richness in the mouth. This builds quickly, showing off dark cherry fruit backed up with noticeable tannins and creamy, toasty oak. The fruit takes on flashes of raspberry on the mid-palate and the spice integrates well then returns along with a wash of wood tannin on the moderately long, slightly sticky and hot finish. This will prove to be very popular but it's a touch clumsy with the oak for me. 88pts

The Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 after a family split with the Charles Krug Winery, which had been founded by Robert’s father.  After heading out on his own, Robert settled on land in Napa valley, and in particular the famed To Kalon Vineyard in the Rutherford district. The original plot in To Kalon Vineyard was only 12 acres, but today there are 450 acres under vine. The Robert Mondavi Winery also includes the Wappo Hill Vineyard, which is a 400 acre plot in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. Within a year of its inception, the Robert Mondavi Winery proved to be a true pioneer, not only with the establishment of his winery but also by introducing and popularizing the use of French oak barrels for wine, European wine techniques, and the bottling of varietal wines. Robert Mondavi Winery only uses French Oak barrels for storing wine, and his influence and success led to the practice’s prevalence. Among Mondavi’s greatest successes one would have to count the creation of the Fume Blanc moniker for Sauvignon Blanc as well as the introduction of his benchmark Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet. Today Robert Mondavi’s legacy is carried on under the watchful eye of his wife who works with the current winemakers Genevieve Janssens, Gustavo Gonzalez, and Richard Arnold to ensure that today’s Robert Mondavi wines deliver the elegance, appeal, and character that Robert had intended. Very dark and cola-scented with noticeable alcohol, gentle herb notes, some distinct nutmeg tones and baked black cherry fruit. On entry this is rich and voluptuous with tons of sweet black cherry fruit and a touch of baking spices. The acids are well integrated and the tannins give a very lightly dusty feel to the mid-palate. The wine has some attractive herbal nuances on the mid-palate, with a hint of citrus peel popping out toward the backend. The finish is a bit short but this is holding its alcohol very well. A rich, dense style of Pinot that many will enjoy but it lacks the elegance of Pinot Noir. 88pts

Write your review here, and rate the wine from 1 to 5 glasses above. This really offers up some nice, complex aromatics that start off rather pine foresty with really sweet wood tones that recall coffee cream, and marshmallows but gains some depth with a meaty note and accents of sweet pipe tobacco and some dried tomato. On entry this is sweet but quickly turns hard and angular with tough little tannins fighting the small red fruits for your attention. The tannins win on the moderately short finish, which is also a tad hot. This just may need time but is a little disappointing. 86pts

Sorta confused by this. Notes of dark cherry and plum as thew winery says are fine, but there is a layered mintiness to this that seems out of place, but adds to the overall freshness on the palate. Cinnamon, chewy tannins are worth it. Drink now - 88 points - Paul

My first impression of this wine was that the grape flavor overpowered all the other ones on the first taste. The wine became more balanced and smooth after a while.

Nothing exciting. Perhaps it's just too young and needs more development in the bottle. Sweet fruity notes, but no complexity. A bit unbalanced. Not what I expect from Carneros pinot noir. - Tasted at Marché Bacchus 1/16/10

Luscious and balanced, cherry nose with hints of truffles. Round in the mouth with long finish. A great expression of Carneros Pinot Noir.

Robed in deep color, this Pinot Noir opens with the intense aromas of dark fruits - black cherries and plums - that echo on the palate. Well integrated acids bring a measure of vibrancy to the lush, fleshy texture, and fine-grained tannins lend structure into the smooth, lingering finish.

When Robert Mondavi founded the iconic Robert Mondavi Winery in 1966, his vision was to create fine Napa Valley wines that would stand in the company of the of the world s finest.

Cherry colored with a crimson cast. Moderately light-bodied. Moderate extract, oak and tannins. Herbs, red berries, cherries. Floral nose. Attractively high toned spiced style, with a rounded and racy fruit profile through the toasty finish. Drinking rather well now with good acidity to match rich foods.

Good bright, dark red. Red berries and flowers on the nose, with a high-toned suggestion of strawberry syrup. Sweet and fruity but a bit simple, with strawberry and redcurrant dominating; some hints of spicy oak. A tad dry on the back but probably best for drinking over the next three or four years.

Medium cherry red. Medium-bodied. Moderately extracted. Moderately oaked. Moderately tannic. Rich cherry aromas with vanilla accents lead a rounded palate with some depth of fruit flavors and a hint of astringent tannins giving some authority to the finish.

A touch earthy and leathery, but the texture is smooth and polished, and the hints of dried cherries and berry are appealing, have some nuance. Finishes with mild tannins. Drink now through 2001.
