What to Expect

Merlot has gotten a bad rap as of late but there is no denying the wine's appeal. Packed with deep, dark berry fruit and nuanced hints of cocoa, herb and earth with a soft structure. Its velvety texture makes Merlot instantly appealing and an obvious alternative to similar, more tannic Bordeaux varieties.

Winemakers Notes

The Robert Mondavi Private Selection range wines embrace the best characteristics of their distinctive vineyards on California's Central Coast, where cool fog and ocean breezes create a long growing season that results in grapes of intense flavour concentration. The unique geography and fascinating history of California's Central Coast give the region a character as distinctive as its wines. Tasting Notes - The Napa Valley Merlot sports a vivacious nose, with waves of blackberry, black plum and huckleberry aromas merging with notes of tar, tobacco and vanilla oak. In the mouth, rich black fruit flavors mingle with a bit of spice and a hint of taffy from toasted barrels, all harmoniously integrated with ripe tannins. A full-bodied yet supple wine, this Merlot has good structure, with excellent acidity that keeps it lively. The majority of grapes were sourced from vineyards in the Stags Leap District, with additional fruit from Los Carneros and our To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville.

This wine's exceptional character comes from choice Central Coast grapes, primarily from Monterey County, a regionthat provides the temperate climate, cool breezes and moist alluvial soils that Merlot loves. The Merlot was blended with16% Syrah which added color and richness, and enhanced the wine's pure fruit flavors with just a hint of oak forroundness and complexity. The 2005 vintage displays classic Merlot attributes: bright ripe black cherry and plum aromas with subtle notes of spiceand chocolate; soft, juicy, balanced flavors; a smooth, supple texture with well-rounded read more...
