Robert Mondavi Fume Blanc Napa Valley 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This is subtle smoky with some geranium stem notes and slightly woodsy tones under a layer of ripe, limy fruit. In the mouth this is rich and perfumed with a very smooth texture that makes it immediately attractive The fruits tend to the tropical with notes of pineapple, citrus and melon, though there are intriguing notes of white peach and green tomato adding depth and complexity. This finishes with a minor mineral flourish and lovely inner mouth perfumes of fresh herbs. 90pts

The Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 after a family split with the Charles Krug Winery, which had been founded by Robert’s father.  After heading out on his own, Robert settled on land in Napa valley, and in particular the famed To Kalon Vineyard in the Rutherford district. The original plot in To Kalon Vineyard was only 12 acres, but today there are 450 acres under vine. The Robert Mondavi Winery also includes the Wappo Hill Vineyard, which is a 400 acre plot in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. Within a year of its inception, the Robert Mondavi Winery proved to be a true pioneer, not only with the establishment of his winery but also by introducing and popularizing the use of French oak barrels for wine, European wine techniques, and the bottling of varietal wines. Robert Mondavi Winery only uses French Oak barrels for storing wine, and his influence and success led to the practice’s prevalence. Among Mondavi’s greatest successes one would have to count the creation of the Fume Blanc moniker for Sauvignon Blanc as well as the introduction of his benchmark Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet. Today Robert Mondavi’s legacy is carried on under the watchful eye of his wife who works with the current winemakers Genevieve Janssens, Gustavo Gonzalez, and Richard Arnold to ensure that today’s Robert Mondavi wines deliver the elegance, appeal, and character that Robert had intended. Nice typical warm climate Sauvignon Blanc aromas of ripe fruit, with notes of peach, melon and citrus in a rather intense, bright register. On the palate this adds a nice herbal, green fruit top note that adds some contrast to the rich fruit. The acidity is very bright , keeping this lighter weight wine nice and vibrant and helping to drive the finish, which shows a nice citrus final. 87pts

This smells decedent with rich notes of candied almonds, dried apricots, dried citrus fruits, candied grapefruit peel and an herbal top note all jumping from the glass. In the mouth it’s medium rich with a nice sugar/acid balance that keeps it lively. The fruit is supported by the generous acidity and complimented by an almond brittle edge. Real length with apricot fruit and nuanced caramel emerging on the finale. 92pts

Very pale yellow in the glass. Very pale. More fruity, but slightly flowery nose. On the tongue delicate fruit flavors suggesting peach, kiwi, green apple. Very crisp and refreshing. A super easy wine to drink on a hot day—and even though it is, technically, winter here in the Northern Hemisphere, it is pretty darned hot, here, today.

Initially very smooth. Slightly citrusy, but I feel like it's a little creamy as well. It's a bit too hot (or maybe that's the bite of a little too much citrus?). Either way, while this may go really well with food, I found it was a very strong wine to just sip without anything balancing out its bite.

I just bought this at Albertsons in Dallas on 123115 for $14.46+tax. The price was 'not found' - I guess because it was a lost bottle buried in the shelves. :-) They charged me the price of a less expensive one I bought (thank goodness). Well it's New Year's Eve and I am enjoying it. Wondered if a fume blanc would be good 7 years later but very nice

Flavor descriptors: Fresh Meyer lemon and tangerine citrus aromas spring from the glass, joined by juicy grapefruit, ripe peach, guava and a hint of freshly cut grass in our iconic Fumé Blanc wine. The style, created by Robert Mondavi decades ago, has been endearing American wine lovers to the virtues of the Sauvignon Blanc grape ever since. Vintage: Generous winter rains helped alleviate the drought conditions of the past four years, and the 2016 growing season started early. Throughout the summer months, we enjoyed cooler than average daytime highs and cool evenings, providing balancing acidity to our sun-ripened grapes. The near-perfect growing season continued through harvest and our grapes were safely in the cellar as the valley's first significant rainstorm arrived late October. We are grateful for a fifth consecutive vintage of stellar quality Napa Valley wines. The grapes for our richly expressive Fumé Blanc were picked between August 3rd and September 22nd. Vineyards: We take full advantage of the complementary characteristics of the fruit from our Wappo Hill vineyard in the Stag’s Leap District and our renowned To Kalon in Oakville. Together, they make up the majority of the blend. We look to Wappo Hill for the bright citrus and herbal flavors as well as its classic Sauvignon Blanc lift. Our gorgeous To Kalon vineyard fruit supplies richness, weight, age-ability and increased complexity, bringing in layers of floral, tropical, and mineral flavors to the blend. Winemaking: The grapes were hand-harvested in the cool of the morning and gently pressed as whole clusters--minimizing skin contact--to retain freshness and vibrancy. All of the juice was barrel fermented for added richness and complexity, with 2% in new French oak for added texture and complexity. The new wine was aged for six (6) months in 60-gallon French oak barrels, sûr lie (on the yeast lees), and hand stirred twice a month for a creamy texture and seamless integration of flavors. The addition of a small percentage of Semillon gives the final blend a broader mouth feel and enhanced complexity. The wine was bottled in April 2017. Varietal composition: 92 % Sauvignon Blanc 8 % Semillon Total acid: 6.5 g/L Final pH: 3.14 Residual sugar: 0.40 g/L Alcohol: 14.5 % by volume

The original Napa Valley Fume Blanc, Robert Mondavi coined the term back in the 60's and created a new category of white wine. 100% Sauvignon Blanc just like the French namesake Pouilly Fume, and 68% is barrel fermented in French oak and aged on the lies for four months. This adds richness and complexity that's hard to come by in most California Sauvignon Blanc.

Flavor descriptors: As with Robert Mondavi’s very first vintage of this innovative style of sauvignon blanc, our 2015 Fumé Blanc adds rich layers of fruit to sauvignon blanc’s mouthwatering freshness. Lemon crème, vine-ripened white peach and guava are joined by a subtle yet intriguing hint of ginger on a creamy wave of flavor. Vintage: 2015 started warmer and drier than usual, without a drop of rain in January. The dry conditions continued well into April with some early irrigation in the vineyards. A cooler May reduced fruit set and provided the first signs of a lighter crop for the vintage. The harvest brought in fruit at optimal flavor maturity before a series of heat waves hit the valley. Overall, the 2015 harvest is one of the earliest on record. The grapes for our richly expressive Fumé Blanc were picked between August 6th and September 2nd. Winemaking: The grapes were hand-harvested in the cool of the morning and gently pressed as whole clusters--minimizing skin contact--to retain freshness and vibrancy. Eighty-five percent of the juice was barrel fermented for added richness and complexity. The balance underwent a cool fermentation in stainless steel to heighten the vibrant fruity and herbal flavors. The new wine was aged for five months in 60-gallon French oak barrels, sûr lie (on the yeast lees), and hand stirred twice a month for a creamy texture and seamless integration of flavors. The addition of a small percentage of Semillon gives the final blend a broader mouth feel and enhanced complexity. The wine was bottled in March 2016. Varietal composition: 96% Sauvignon Blanc 4% Semillon Total acid: 6.5 g/L Final pH: 3.21 Residual sugar: 0.73 g/L Alcohol: 14.5 % by volume

Flavor descriptors: The zesty lemon, lime and orange citrus, fragrant peach, and fresh pineapple fruit of our 2014 Fumé Blanc are mouthwatering delicious, with lemon-lime blossom and minerality further tantalizing the palate, on a wine that is both silky in texture and refreshingly focused. Vintage: 2014 started with worrisome, drought-like conditions, and many feared a parched, dry spring as in 2013. Refreshingly, spring rains came in February and into March providing water for the soils and filling reservoirs. The wine growing season will most be remembered for the August 24th Napa earthquake that occurred just as harvest was commencing in the Napa Valley. The vines were not affected and harvest finished early, bringing in beautiful, healthy fruit. Grapes for our 2014 Napa Valley Fumé Blanc were picked between September 4th and 19th. Flavor descriptors: A kaleidoscope of lively tangerine and lime zest, gooseberry, honeydew melon, jasmine, and orange blossom aromas swirl into a crisp sip of lemon-lime citrus, melon, and fresh meadow flavors with a touch of pea tendrils and newly-cut ginger root in a vibrantly refreshing wine that sends waves of flavor along its wonderfully long, lingering finish. VINTAGE: Consistently beautiful weather in 2013 with almost no rainfall from January through March, bringing an earlier than usual budbreak. April provided a few small rainstorms to quench the vines, and warm weather followed. With just one heat spike in late June and early July, the growing season provided weather for optimal flavor development and acid retention in the grapes, resulting in an early and healthy harvest. Grape picking took place from August 15th through September 25th. WINEMAKING: The grapes were hand-harvested in the cool of the morning and gently pressed as whole clusters--minimizing skin contact--to retain freshness and vibrancy. Sixty percent of the juice was barrel fermented for added richness and complexity, with eight percent in new French oak. The balance underwent a cool fermentation in stainless steel to heighten the vibrant fruity and herbal flavors. The new wine was aged for five months in 60-gallon French oak barrels, sûr lie (on the yeast lees) and hand stirred twice a month for a creamy texture and seamless integration of flavors. The addition of 10% Semillon gives the final blend a broader mouth feel and enhanced complexity. Fresh, mouth-watering flavors of white peach and kumquats ensconced in creamy texture. Vibrant and expressive, with a beautiful balance of weight and zesty acidity, this elegant wine closes with a long, memorable finish.

This is rounded by oak aging, which brings up scents of fennel and beeswax, giving the finish an earthy impression. The fruit is brisk with lemon pith flavors and pinpoint acidity. A dark, savory white for braised pork with fennel.
